GODZILLA 2000: Godzilla (Tsutomo Kitagawa) is back and this time he's trying to smash and destroy all of Japan's nuclear reactors and power plants. In this 23rd film in the cult series of monster movies that began in 1954, GODZILLA 2000 beckons the giant, indestructible lizard from his hiding place deep in the ocean. A local scientist (Takehiro Murata) who tries to decode the giant lizard's motives and predict where his next terrifying steps will land concludes that there must be a reason why Godzilla has emerged from the sea. However, when a 6,000-year-old meteor surfaces from the bottom of the ocean and turns into a spaceship, Godzilla--along with the entire population of Japan--is overwhelmed by chaos, crisis, and hysteria. Yuki (Naomi Nishidi), a local journalist trying to get a close-up shot of Godzilla, along with Shinoda (Takehiro Murata) and his kid daughter (Mayu Sizuki), form a guerilla research group called the GPN (Godzilla Prediction Network). They are the "good guys," making the CCI (Crisis Control Intelligence), headed up by a hilariously nihilistic Katagiri (Hiroshi Abe), the "bad guys." Takao Okawara's GODZILLA 2000 is perfectly consistent with its predecessors: the monsters are nasty and ferocious and they wipe out every skyscraper in Tokyo, literally leveling the city. The film brings back all the old tricks, with special effects akin to the Godzilla films of yore and plenty of monster mania. GODZILLA VS. DESTROYAH: Will Godzilla be the source of his own downfall? The atomic particles that give Godzilla his powers are on the verge of meltdown, and the evil oxygen-destroying monster Destroyah, Godzilla's most formidable opponent, has invaded the earth. Can he defeat Destroyah before he self-destructs? An excellent, introspective chapter in the Godzilla saga. GODZILLA VS. SPACE GODZILLA: When a devious Godzilla clone arrives from outerspace to ravage the earth, Godzilla, Junior Godzilla, and Mogera--a giant robot created to destroy Godzilla--must team up to protect their planet. All the while, a team of psychics attempt to control Godzilla telepathically, much to the annoyance of the radioactive lizard. GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA: This classic science fiction epic pits the fire-breathing monster Godzilla against a giant webspinning moth. Two mysterious tiny twin girls hold the secret to the control of the destructive insect which nearly destroys Japan. GODZILLA VS. KING GHIDORA: missaries from the future arrive in Japan with a shocking proposal: travel back through time to eliminate the monster that would become the fearsome Godzilla. But are their motives pure, or are they merely the puppets of Godzilla's newest foe, King Ghidora? A monster "mano a mano" is sure to ensue, in the best "Godzilla" tradition. GODZILLA VS. MONTER ZERO: A heroic space pilot battles the controller of Planet X. The evil ruler's aim is to destroy the Earth with the assistance of several powerful monsters. GODZILLA VS. MEGARIUS: In an effort to get rid of Godzilla once and for all, Japan develops a device which is supposed to open up a black hole, allowing its people to blast the giant city-stomping lizard creature into another dimension. While the hole is opened, an insect from that other dimension sneaks through and lays an egg, which finds its way into the sewers of Tokyo. Before long, a swarm of alien insects--which feed on Godzilla's energy--are wreaking their own brand of havoc on Japan and its citizens. GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA: According to legend, when the people of Okinawa are in danger, a monster will appear to save them. The legend is put to the test as a monstrous Cyborg threatens to destroy the Earth. A.K.A. GODZILLA VS. THE BIONIC MONSTER.

George Roy Hill's adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's whimsical antiwar black comedy--an immensely popular novel at the time of the film's release because of its implicit condemnation of the war in Vietnam--stars Michael Sacks as the placid Billy Pilgrim. He's become "unstuck in time," as the author describes him, or more prosaically, he's had a nervous breakdown as a result of a recurrence of the trauma of witnessing the horrific Allied firebombing of Dresden in 1945. The desultory narrative has Billy jumping from his war experience to his future on the planet Tralfamadore with the buxom Montana Wildhack (Valerie Perrine), then to an episode of shock therapy, then to an episode in his childhood, and then to his life as a relatively unhappy suburban optometrist. Throughout, the naive Billy remains a curious mixture of kindness and detachment, the best combination of qualities one could have, the author seems to imply, for surviving in a world of meaningless suffering. Vonnegut's novel may be unfilmable, and Hill may have been too cautious a choice as director, but he does a good job of conveying many of the qualities of the author's elusive style. Michael Sacks possesses the requisite air of innocence for his role, and Ron Liebman gives a great performance as a choleric fellow G.I.

Adapted from Frank Miller's graphic novels, SIN CITY is Robert Rodriguez's striking film noir infused with fantasy, taking place in a world where it is eternally nighttime and everything is drenched in rain and violence. Using a unique combination of silvery black and white digital photography with occasional flashes of bright color for dazzling punctuation, Rodriguez employs green screen techniques and paints a backdrop around each scene, using Miller's co-direction as his cue to match the original setting as closely as possible. Three stories weave together, occasionally overlapping. With lines delivered flatly in the hard-boiled style of Raymond Chandler, these tales are about crime, love, loss, and being preternaturally tough. In the most caustically dramatic segment, Mickey Rourke plays the fearlessly lovestruck Marv, a trenchcoat-clad beast who falls in love with prostitute Goldie (Jaime King) only to find her murdered by a demonic cannibal (Elijah Wood). In another segment, Bruce Willis plays Hartigan, a rogue cop with a "bum ticker" whose goal in life is to save Nancy (Jessica Alba), an innocent stripper, from a murderous rapist (Nick Stahl). The third segment stars Clive Owen as a detective caught between murdered cop Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro) and a slew of lethally dangerous vixens lead by Gail (Rosario Dawson). With blood spurting white, yellow, and yes even red; a roster of hot actors that goes on and on; and sound editing that makes you feel like you're the one being punched in the face, SIN CITY is a gift for fans of Miller's art, loaded with style and grit.

Much like cult-favorites LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER and MORTAL KOMBAT, IN THE NAME OF THE KING: A DUNGEON SIEGE TALE is a fantasy-adventure based on a popular video game series, Dungeon Siege. The film follows the simple but heroic and fearless Farmer, portrayed by Jason Statham (THE TRANSPORTER, THE ITALIAN JOB), as he gets caught up in the brink-of-war tensions of King Konraid (Burt Reynolds), his back-stabbing nephew Duke Fallow (Matthew Lillard), and the evil wizard, Gallian (Ray Liotta). The film features similar plot-points to the critically acclaimed THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy (2001-2003), including a sinister beastly army parallel to LOTR's orcs of Mordor, called the Krugs, responsible for killing members of Farmer's family and kidnapping his wife, Solana (Claire Forlani). High- adventure follows, as Farmer, and his brother-in-law Bastian (Will Sanderson) and friend Norick (Ron Perlman) pursue the Krugs, which lead them to a vast underground lair of enslaved humans, orchestrated by Gallian, as he seeks to create and rule a hellish underworld with magic and mysticism. The film also includes John Rhys-Davis (THE LORD OF THE RINGS, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK) as Merick, a noble wizard, and the King's closest confidante and spiritual healer; and Leelee Sobieski (THE WICKER MAN) as Merick's daughter, who as the scorned lover of Gallian, has put the kingdom at great risk. Although some of the all-star cast seems a bit out of place in a sword-and-sorcerer epic, video game fans won't mind much as the majority of the two-hour film contains nonstop action and intriguing fantasy characters.

This double feature contains two films starring the legendarily monstrous ape King Kong. Dating from the 1960s, both films were made by Japanese director Ishiro Honda. KING KONG VS. GODZILLA: When a Japanese businessman named Mr. Tako hears that a native tribe on the island of Farou possesses abnormally large berries, he sends his employees Sakuri and Furue to retrieve the fruit. Better yet, he tells them to also capture King Kong, a gorilla monster who has become gigantic as a result of eating the berries. On their way back to Japan, the team wrestles to gain control over the enormous and powerful creature, who breaks free just as another notorious monster, Godzilla, is released from the block of ice where he's been hidden for the last seven years. KING KONG ESCAPES: In another King Kong installment by Ishiro Honda, the giant ape monster's skills are required for a science project by Doctor Who and his helpers. When a mechanically devised robot version of the creature cannot do the job, the team of scientists must go and retrieve the real King Kong himself. But no sooner do they get their hands on the enormous beast than they realize they are no match for a creature of his size. Calling on his robotic imposter for help, the scientists unknowingly bring terror upon themselves.

THE RETURN OF THE KING, the third and final film in Peter Jackson's THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, finds Middle-earth on the cusp of great change. Weary hobbits Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) venture further into the dark realm of Mordor, guided by the increasingly desperate Gollum (Andy Serkis), the two-faced former owner of the Ring that Frodo must destroy in the fires of Mount Doom. Meanwhile Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Pippin (Billy Boyd) contend with the deranged ruler Denethor (John Noble) at the once-mighty city of Minas Tirith, as Merry (Dominic Monaghan) joins Éowyn (Miranda Otto) and the Riders of Rohan to hold back the forces of Sauron. Amidst the chaos, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) must rise to his destiny, aided by Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) in assembling allies for a massive battle that will decide the fate of Middle-earth. With RETURN, Jackson brings J.R.R. Tolkien's world-renowned tale to a stunning conclusion. As with THE TWO TOWERS, the director deftly weaves various storylines together in one remarkable scene after another. Spectacular visuals complement Jackson's sharp focus on the characters and their emotional battles. While the special effects help to create huge battles and frightening creatures on a previously unseen scale, they never outshine the excellent ensemble of actors who bring the heart of the story home. A truly astounding work of filmmaking, THE RETURN OF THE KING skillfully concludes one of the greatest trilogies in cinema history.

The thoroughly titled KYO KARA MAOH! - GOD(?) SAVE OUR KING! revolves young Yuri Shibuya. Yuri loves baseball and lives in an alternate dimension where people, while in the midst of an ongoing battle between humans and demons, regularly travel from one place to another by making contact with water surfaces. With its notable number of attractively-drawn male characters, GOD(?) SAVE OUR KING! belongs to a special class of "male harem" anime, a genre moniker offered in direct response to "anime harem," which typically exploits the female form. This fifth volume of the second season finds Yuri and his pals in possession of the box named "End of the Wind" and trying to fend off a gang of soldiers on their way back from Fransia to the Great Demon Kingdom.
