Less Than Jake - The People's History of Less Than Jake [DVD]
The punk-strewn world of Less Than Jake is brought to the screen with this visual documentation of the band. An incredible array of footage is included, with live shots, interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and a whole lot more. The band also includes their first attempt at a home movie with the wittly-titled AVANTE TARDE, which sees the group and their entourage trying their hand at comedy. The bulk of the footage was sent in by fans of Less Than Jake (hence the title, THE PEOPLE'S HISTORY OF LESS THAN JAKE), making this a fascinating, and highly unusual, release from the band.

10 Items or Less [DVD]
Where does a down-on-his-luck movie star go for inspiration when his career has sputtered to a four-year halt? This is the question director/writer Brad Silberling (LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS) poses for his central character--an unnamed actor played by Morgan Freeman--in 10 ITEMS OR LESS. The answer lies amid the cheap cereal packets and decomposing vegetables of a dilapidated grocery store on the outskirts of Los Angeles, a location Freeman travels to so he can research a potential comeback role. Once there he encounters Scarlet (Paz Vega), a Spanish cashier who, terminally bored with her life and job, takes out all her grievances on the unsuspecting customers in her 10-Items-or-Less line. At the end of Scarlet's shift, Freeman's character finds himself stranded in this desolate outpost, so he approaches her and the two strike up a deal--she will give him a ride home, but only after he has shadowed her while she finishes her errands for the day. Freeman draws some well-observed comic material from the fish-out-of-water situations his character finds himself in, and Silberling proves his low-budget directorial chops after working on a number of bigger projects. 10 ITEMS OR LESS is a slight piece, coming in around the 80-minute mark, but the interplay between Freeman and Vega really makes the film, with the two actors finding a meaningful balance in the serious and amusing material Silberling has written for them. While Freeman's work is typical of the high quality expected of him, Vega is a revelation. Her feisty, occasionally downtrodden, and remarkably beautiful interpretation of Scarlet provides a strong indication of her potential as an actress, and bigger things will surely follow.

Less Than Zero/The Pick-Up Artist (2-Disc Set) [DVD]
LESS THAN ZERO: Friendship is central to these characters as they try to find their way in the fast lane on the fastest track of all - the disengaged, super affluent, young Beverly Hills lifestyle. LESS THAN ZERO is based on Bret Easton Ellis's novel of the same name and stars Andrew McCarthy, James Spader, Robert Downey Jr., and Jami Gertz. THE PICK-UP ARTIST: A romantically compulsive elementary school teacher (Robert Downey Jr.) meets his match in the form of a sassy museum guide (Molly Ringwald), who allows herself to be seduced--but then wants nothing more to do with him.
Ding-a-ling-Less [DVD]
The routine snip that severs the umbilical cord at birth bears horrendous consequences for Jack Peterson (Kirk Wilson) in this off-beat comedy from director Onur Tukel. A confused nurse got her wires crossed when Jack was born, and accidentally severed his penis instead of his cord, leading to one frustratingly sexless adult. His best friend Alan (Robert Longstreet) does his best to explain to Jack what it's like to be endowed, offering some humorous explanations of sexual positions, masturbation, and many other penis-related activities. The jokes come thick and fast, with Tukel seemingly intent on having his actors run through every dick joke known to man. Alan's discovery of a doctor who can perform a penis transplant is the fulcrum on which the film turns, with Jack fully prepared to go under the knife and witness a sexual awakening. The gleeful sense of fun shot through DING-A-LING-LESS contributes to a wholly satisfying film, and one which male and female audiences should find highly amusing.
A Life Less Ordinary (Repackaged) [DVD]
Petulant, rich honeypie Celine and scruffily adorable janitor Robert find themselves on the road to romance after he kidnaps her to avenge his firing by her callous father. But what they don't realize is that their love is celestially predetermined, as a pair of gun-toting angels gives chase to force the issue. A quixotic and inconsistent Hollywood debut from the production team of director Boyle, writer John Hodge, and producer Andrew MacDonald (SHALLOW GRAVE and TRAINSPOTTING).
10 Items or Less: The Complete First and Second Seasons (2-Disc Set) [DVD]
From the school of THE OFFICE and THIS IS SPINAL TAP comes this largely improvisational single-camera sitcom set in a tragically underused milieu that's ripe for hilarity--the small-town supermarket! Leslie (Eric Lehr) is a New York City businessman who's on the verge of going under when his father passes away, leaving the family business without an owner. Leslie, doing what he has to do, moves back home to make sure the Greens & Grains grocery store isn't bought out by its competitor, a daffy and inappropriate value mart manager named Amy Anderson (Jennifer Elise Cox, THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE). Now in charge of an entire establishment of oddball supermarket employees, Leslie, who isn't exactly debonair himself, seems to land in a strange situation every week. But, despite the occasional exploitation of a Jesus-shaped stain for marketing purposes, harassment of customers, or subjection of his employees to rigorous reality-show-like challenges in a desperate attempt to find out who has to get fired, Leslie is a caring boss and it doesn't take long for the G & G crew to become a bizarre, oversized family. Each 22-minute episode of 10 ITEMS OR LESS has been edited down from roughly 30-plus hours of improvised dialogue. This set includes all 13 episodes from the series' first and second seasons.
His and Her Circumstances Vol. 3: Another Life, Less Ordinary [DVD]

However, this golden girl persona masks her private tendencies toward sloth and malice, a side that is provoked when the school gets a new transfer student named Souichiro Arima. Handsome, brilliant, and athletic, Souichiro is everything Yukino tries to be and more. Although at first Yukino targets Souichiro as an adversary, she soon finds that she is inexorably attracted to him, and he to her.

Not One Less [DVD]
NOT ONE LESS is an original, extremely affecting story of a small Chinese village and the children that inhabit it. When an elementary school teacher leaves her assignment to care for her ill mother, the community leader allows a 13-year-old girl, Wei Minzhi, to take her place. After the class clown is forced to leave the village in order to find work, Wei Minzhi organizes a fundraiser that will give her enough money to track him down and return him to his rightful place in the classroom. Zhang's (RAISE THE RED LANTERN) film proves that determination and will can conquer any odds.
The Cameron Diaz Collection (3-DVD Set) [DVD]
IN HER SHOES: In this screen adaptation of Jennifer Weiner's bestselling novel, Toni Collette (MURIEL'S WEDDING) is Rose Feller, an overweight, overworked, and painfully undersexed lawyer who fills an emotional void with pints of Haagen-Dazs and a closetful of expensive shoes that she never wears. Little sis Maggie (an always radiant Cameron Diaz), who is prone to public drunkenness, one-night stands, and wearing lingerie as outerwear, is as lacking in career prospects as her sister is in romantic ones. When her irresponsible behavior gets her kicked out of her father's house by her spiteful stepmother, Maggie has nowhere to crash but her elder sister's couch. But, after she ignites a series of disasters ranging from the minor to the catastrophic, Maggie is cast out by her angry older sibling, with no job, no money, and no one to take her in. She finds a stash of hidden letters in her father's desk drawer that enable her to track down her estranged grandmother (the wonderfully centered Shirley MacLaine) in a Florida retirement community, hoping to use her impressive skills of manipulation and false charm to financial benefit. While Maggie begins to adapt to life as a nubile young fish in the waters of shuffleboard and wheelchairs, Rose, up in the wintry north, quits her stifling job and begins her own personal transformation. Both women's paths to spiritual growth and self-actualization might ring false if handled by less nuanced performers and a flashier director, but here they are subtle enough to be both inspiring and realistic. Director Curtis Hanson has proven to be a flexible artist, jumping from genre to genre with the prowess and confidence of those studio directors of Hollywood's Golden Age. With IN HER SHOES, the man behind L.A. CONFIDENTIAL and 8 MILE elevates the "chick flick" out of that pigeonhole, crafting a story of surprising depth and universal appeal. THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY: THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY is a no-holds-barred comedy tour-de-force in which 30-something Ben Stiller locates and courts his high school dreamgirl (Cameron Diaz), unwittingly enlisting the help of some of her more hilariously psychotic suitors. In-your-face sight gags and unapologetic raunchiness disguise a riotously funny love story that is actually very sweet. Be amazed at the impeccable casting and stellar performances of the supporting players. A LIFE LESS ORDINARY: Petulant, rich honeypie Celine and scruffily adorable janitor Robert find themselves on the road to romance after he kidnaps her to avenge his firing by her callous father.
