"Classic Clower Power" (05/16/2006) Comedy Clower, Jerry, MCA NashvilleLiner Note Author: Rich Kienzle. Photographer: Alan Messer. Classic Clower Power is a two-and-a-half-hour double-CD compilation drawn from Jerry Clower's 28-album catalog for Decca and MCA Records, stretching from the 1970s to the 1990s. As such, it is the most comprehensive best-of ever assembled of Clower's country comedy. MCA Nashville's decision to release a collection so extensive in 2006 is a reflection of Clower's influence on an entire generation of comedians, an influence that could not be more obvious from these discs. One need only turn to the third track on the second CD, "Examples of a Red Neck," to recognize Clower's definitive impact on Jeff Foxworthy, who has made a career out of sentences that begin, "You might be a redneck if.." But if Clower is influential, he is also a distinct comic personality on his own. More than anything, he is an old-fashioned storyteller. This is not a man who needs a punchline every few seconds. He sets up elaborate jokes in the form of stories that illuminate rural Southern life, particularly as lived by the Ledbetter family, who seem to embody all the quirks of a country existence. Nor is Clower a blue comedian. Over the course of 150 minutes, there is never a four-letter word or a sexual situation. Like any comic, Clower has his targets, the most frequent ones being supposedly sophisticated city people. But the joke is just as likely to be on one of his Southern heroes. When he strays into the political realm, he can become fuzzy-minded, however. "The She Coon of Women's Lib" finds him describing his wife's luxurious and lazy life as an argument against women's lib, and he doesn't make much sense. At another point, he declares, "President Clinton hates me," by which he presumably means that, as a wealthy man, he is required to pay income taxes in the highest bracket. He makes the specious argument that this is unfair, since he was born poor, as if tax laws shouldn't apply to self-made men. Again, however, he is just as ready to poke fun at his characters' political views as anything else. "A real Mississippian," he says at one point, "don't even agree now that Richard Nixon ever done anything wrong." But then, as a real Mississippian himself, maybe he's not kidding. ~ William Ruhlmann

"Poetry on Record: 98 Poets Read Their Work 1888-2006" (04/30/2006) Spoken Word Various Artists, Shout! FactoryPersonnel: Mark Daterman (guitar). Audio Remasterer: Randy Perry . Liner Note Authors: Rebekah Presson Mosby; Al Young. Poetry on Record: 98 Poets Read Their Work 1888-2006, the deluxe, artfully presented box set from Shout Factory, is essentially (though not related to commercially) a new, updated version of In Their Own Voices: A Century of Recorded Poetry released in 1996 by Rhino. Perhaps it's because they were assembled by the same person, Rebekah Presson Mosby, who compiled not only the Rhino anthology, but also Our Souls Have Grown Deep Like the Rivers: Black Poets Read Their Work and, with Elise Paschen, Poetry Speaks, and she writes the extended liner essay here entitled "Our Lives Distilled." This set was introduced -- as was the Rhino anthology -- with a different essay, by poet, educator, and author Al Young. Much of the material on the Rhino set is replicated here. In the case of writers from the 19th century through the early '50s, this is understandable. After all, how many tapes of Walt Whitman, Alfred Lord Tennyson (there has been some deabte as tothe authenticity of these two recordings), and W.B. Yeats can there be? What isn't here is other poets -- poets who haven't had the same work duplicated over and over -- and why, when there is so much else available? Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski, Lawrence Ferlenghetti, e.e. cummings, Etheridge Knight, Charles Simic, Sharon Olds, Rita Dove, and many others included here have plenty of recorded material available, some of it arguably as good as what's here. But, licensing being what it is, who knows. In any case, there are some very important updates here: the inclusion of poets such as Carl Hancock Rux, Suji Kwock Kim, Elizabeth Alexander, Elise Paschen, Deborah Garrison, D.A. Powell, Kevin Prufer, Jonathan Lamfers, and more. Many of the greats remain, but it hurts to see Jimmy Santiago Baca and Tess Gallagher left off of this set (they were included on the Rhino package), while it does a heart proud to see some academic stuffed shirts like John Ciardi and Edward Hirsch absent to leave room for some far more vibrant, younger voices, as well as inestimably important historical ones, like the great, dramatic poet James Weldon Johnson (this collection gets points just for including his The Creation in the mix), H.D. (aka Hilda Doolittle), Sterling Brown, Robert Browning, Edgar Lee Masters, and Tennyson (who reads Charge of the Light Brigade). Somebody has to explain why Kenneth Patchen, one of the last links to the traditions of the 19th century yet remaining a thoroughly modern poet and visual artist (of the San Francisco Renaissance school) gets dissed from both collections! There is something included -- or not -- to piss everyone off, but far more pressing is what a wealth there is in this collection. Its book is gorgeously illustrated with biographies, photos, and impeccable design work by Jeff Palo. Highly recommended if you don't have the Rhino collection; but there is too much duplication if you do. ~ Thom Jurek

"Dead City Radio" (05/07/2005) Spoken Word Burroughs, William S., IslandPersonnel: William S. Burroughs (spoken vocals); Frank Simms, Dennis Martin, Leslie Miller, Arlene Martel (vocals); Maxine Neumann (cello); Lenny Pickett (clarinet, woodwinds); Tom Varner (French horn); Cheryl Hardwick (piano); Bobby Previte (drums); John Cale, Donald Fagen, Chris Stein, Friedrich Hollander. Sonic Youth: Kim Gordon, Thurston Moore, Lee Rinaldo, Steve Shelly. Principally recorded at Hairball 3, Lawrence, Kansas. Personnel: William S. Burroughs (vocals); Frank Simms, Dennis Martin, Leslie Miller (vocals); Maxine Neuman (cello); Lenny Pickett (clarinet, woodwinds); Tom Varner (French horn); Cheryl Hardwick (piano, organ); Bobby Previte (percussion); Andrew Green (keyboard programming). Audio Mixers: Joe Ferla; Chris Laidlaw. Liner Note Author: Hal Willner. Recording information: Acoustilog; Bearsville Studios, New York, NY; Hairball 3; Lawrence, KS; Quadrosonic Studios, NY; Sigma Sound Studios, NY; Sorcerer Sound, NY. Editors: Hal Willner; Nelson Lyon. Photographers: Adrian Boot; Nelson Lyon. Unknown Contributor Roles: Kim Gordon; Lee Ranaldo; Allen Ginsberg; Thurston Moore. Arranger: Lenny Pickett. In 1988, genius producer Hal Willner (best known, perhaps ironically, for his Disney tribute album STAY AWAKE) traveled to Lawrence, Kansas and taped NAKED LUNCH author and Beat Generation legend William Burroughs performing excerpts from his work. He then enlisted the likes of Donald Fagen and Sonic Youth to create accompanying musical collages. To this end he also unearthed Aaron Copland-esque music recorded in the late '40s and '50s for various radio shows by Toscanini's NBC Symphony Orchestra. The more contemporary backing material is fine, and Burroughs' dry as dust readings sound particularly unsettling when backed by symphonic Americana. Be warned, however, that the album ends with the author cackling his way through a sepulchral German version of Marlene Dietrich's "Falling in Love Again;" it's as creepy a performance as you're likely to hear in a lifetime.

"This American Life: Lies, Sissies & Fiascoes" (05/04/1999) Spoken Word This American Life, Rhino Records (USA)LIES, SISSIES & FIASCOES: THE BEST OF THIS AMERICAN LIFE features segments from the syndicated NPR program. Producers include: Peter Clowney, Ira Glass, Julie Snyder, Alix Spiegel, Nancy Updike. Compilation producers: Ira Glass, Nancy Updike. Includes liner notes by Mr. Ira Glass. Digitally remastered by Dan Hersch (DigiPrep). This two-disc compilation serves as a useful introduction to NPR's "This American Life." Every week, host Ira Glass explores a theme--lies, sissies and fiascoes being but three--through interviews, readings, found tapes, and deeply revealing audio autobiographies. The discs are nominally funny and sad, but the best "This American Life pieces" manage to be both at once. Highlights include Glass's hilariously awkward recounting of a shopping expedition with an ex-girlfriend, Jack Hitt's screamingly funny tale of a disastrous college production of PETER PAN, the sweet father-daughter bonding of Sarah Vowell's "Shooting Dad," and David Rakoff's reminiscences of playing Freud in a Christmas window at Barneys. Sadly, the collection doesn't include the show's most famous piece, David Sedaris's "Santaland Diaries," or Vowell's brilliant examination of the interpersonal dynamics of mix tapes, or any of the hundreds of other small masterpieces the show churns out weekly, but it's a fine start.

"Get in the Van: On the Road with Black Flag" (11/04/2003) Spoken Word Rollins, Henry, 2 13 61 RecordsProducers: Henry Rollins, Alyson, L. Careaga. Recorded in Los Angeles, California. While Henry Rollins has enough of a reputation over the years for his spoken word material, his best effort actually has its roots in his Black Flag days. An abridgement of his journals and reflections on first becoming a fan and then a member of Black Flag, Get in the Van: On the Road is an often fantastic and quite a hilarious peek into not only his past but that of American punk music across the nation. Though Rollins usually succeeds best with an audience to interact with, his low, steady intensity carries well through the disc, and in some respects all he has to do is let the story tell itself. If there's a specific theme throughout, unsurprisingly, it's about Rollins learning more about self-reliance while the band itself provides inspiration and a few lessons about life along the way -- whether or not one agrees with them is up to the listener. But ultimately it's all about the anecdotes, and the stories alone range from the humorous to the often frightening -- the many tales about police abuse of punk audiences and bands are enough to make one want to carry off a slew of retrospective arrests on the boys in blue. But on the flip side, there are tales ranging from Rollins launching himself from a stage and ending up on top of Jello Biafra in the audience to wandering into a venue to find out who the Misfits cover band he was hearing was and encountering the Misfits themselves. Rollins praises Michael Stipe as an early friend and then flips it around to describe a show with Venom (and their self-described "black f*ckin' metal!") as being a case of having to suffer fools, not very gladly. Then there's Ultravox and Midge Ure's in-person dismissal of Black Flag as "dross" -- but Rollins gets his revenge by mentioning Ure's booties. ~ Ned Raggett

When the first volume of Johnny Cash's AMERICAN series appeared in 1994, it would have been difficult to predict its critical and commercial success, much less the fact that an illness-beset Cash would be turning out a powerful fourth installment of the series eight years later. Like its three predecessors, AMERICAN IV is a home-recorded, bare-bones Rick Rubin production wherein Cash tackles old classics by other writers as well as more contemporary tunes by artists from the rock world, with a smattering of his own new compositions thrown in. It's also arguably the strongest since the first volume. Now that the novelty of hearing the Man in Black tackle tunes by the likes of Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus") and Nine Inch Nails ("Hurt") has worn off, we can get past the gimmickry to fully appreciate the power of Cash's soul-baring interpretations. He brings an equal amount of gravitas to old country and folk tunes like "Streets of Laredo" and "Give My Love to Rose." To hear Cash's worn, husky, lived-in voice inhabit the world-weary narrative of the Beatles' "In My Life" and the graphic, almost spiritual romance of the Ewan MacColl-penned ballad "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is to be led directly to the heart of these songs' deepest meanings. When the first volume of Johnny Cash's AMERICAN series appeared in 1994, it would have been difficult to predict its critical and commercial success, much less the fact that an illness-beset Cash would be turning out a powerful fourth installment of the series eight years later. "Think Tank" (09/22/1998) Spoken Word Rollins, Henry, Dreamworks SKGSolo performer: Henry Rollins (spoken vocals). Engineers include: Randy Fransz. Disc 1 was recorded live at the House Of Blues, Chicago, Illinois on February 13, 1998. Disc 2 was recorded live in Australia in the fall of 1997. Includes liner notes by Henry Rollins. Audio Mixer: Blumpy. Recording information: Australia (1997-1998); House Of Blues, Chicago, IL (1997-1998). Editors: Henry Rollins; Richard Bishop. Photographers: Alison Dyer; John Zomot. Henry Rollins is something of a modern day renaissance man; author, singer, actor, publisher, record executive, performance artist and all-around cool character. Spoken word performances are just one side of Rollins' considerable talent, but the recordings of said performances are among the most endearing Rollins-related artifacts. THINK TANK is a double CD that finds Rollins plying his verbal trade in front of an appreciative audience. In two shows recorded in 1997 and 1998, Rollins attacks the demons of contemporary society with humor, intelligence and passion without ever getting precious or pretentious. It may be his years spent as a hard-working punk singer with Black Flag that gave him his proletarian edge, but he's carried it over admirably into his other endeavors. THINK TANK will make you laugh, frown, wonder, and most importantly, think.
