"Pachinko in Your Head: Non-Linear Music" (09/22/1998) Spoken Word Pachinko In Your Head, Blue Rahn StudioThis is either a brave attempt at finding something musical in the most mudane of sources (think Brian Eno and David Byrne's concept of "found music"), a totally unique ambient experience, or a waste of time and money. All three may be valid, but ultimately the method and the results argue for the latter. The "music" is simply a recording of noise from a pachinko parlor in Japan. This popular pinball game produces a variety of noises, both from the metal balls bouncing around inside the machines and electronic effects meant to complement the action. While millions of Japanese are hooked on the game, the concept of finding music in the random sound generated at one of these gaming palaces doesn't hold up. ~ Ross Boissoneau

"Threads of Glory: 200 Years of America in Words & Music" (08/12/2003) Spoken Word Various Artists, Decca (USA)Performers includes: Ernest Borgnine, Lee Bowman, Henry Fonda, John Forsythe, Lorne Green, George Hamilton, Burt Lancaster, Hugh O'Brian, Susan Oliver, Ronald Reagan, Nancy Reagan, Cesar Romero, Rosalind Russell, Forrest Tucker, Jonathan Winters, Eileen Farrell, Robert Merrill, Ted Heath, Ronnie Aldrich; Eric Rodgers Chorale; London Festival Brass; London Symphony Orchestra; London Philharmonic Orchestra; New Philharmonic Orchestra. This six-LP set (reissued as four CDs in a slipcase in 2003) was conceived and released as part of the festivities surrounding the American bicentennial of 1976. As a production, it stands somewhere midway between the CBS Bicentennial Minutes that ran for more than a year leading up to the event, and the '50s Columbia Masterworks releases The Revolution, The Union, and The Confederacy. Threads of Glory: 200 Years of America in Words & Music sports an all-star cast, featuring such varied Hollywood figures as Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan, Burt Lancaster, Lee Bowman (as narrator), George Hamilton, Lorne Greene, Lloyd Nolan (as George Washington), Henry Fonda, Fred MacMurray, Susan Oliver, Rosalind Russell, Richard Carlson, and Walter Pidgeon, mixes freely with the work of various orchestras and conductors; the result is almost as much a music release as a spoken word document, and is varied enough to be entertaining and informative, despite some fudging of certain information. The CD remastering is very successful, yielding a crisp sound and overall very nice packaging, matching the original LP edition in most respects. It was also something of a surprise when it appeared -- one imagines that this would never have been scheduled for CD reissue if not for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. ~ Bruce Eder
