This Pioneer Bookshelf Speaker System features a pair of speakers with Bass-Reflex enclosures, a type of speaker enclosure that includes a "tuned" port to increase and extend bass response (by releasing some of the energy created by the inward movement of the woofer cone). Bass reflex designs are more power-efficient than acoustic suspension designs. They will play louder than acoustic suspension speakers when driven with the same amplifier power. These speakers have a wide frequency response that can even handle the latest in high-resolution music, SACD and DVD Audio.

Pioneer's not known for great speakers, but the company has hired some ex-KEF engineers and given them the mission to create a new image and a new sound for the brand. The $199/pair list S-DF1-K sports Pioneer's new ISO-Drive baffle System. This design isolates the drivers from the cabinet by means of a floating baffle, thus reducing transmission of vibration from the drivers to the cabinet. Just as the suspension system in your car isolates you from the bumps in the road, ISO-Drive technology helps your speakers deliver smoother sound. In addition to the ISO-Drive design, the 5-1/4-inch woofer and 1-inch tweeter are placed as close together as possible to minimize off-axis response problems and enhance stereo imaging. These speakers are magnetically shielded so you can put them near your video monitor without fear. They also have gold-plated binding-post speaker terminals on the back -- a definite step up from the wire-clip speaker terminals found on the backs of many bookshelf loudspeakers. The S-DF1-K 's black woodgrain cabinet supports a removable black grille and has a contoured vent for punchier bass. You won't get earth-shaking bass response from these speakers (the rated frequency response is 55 Hz-20 kHz), but there's probably enough here for a small office or dorm room.Like its peers in Pioneer's speaker line, the S-DF1-K is rated at 8 ohms nominal impedance. However, the step-up S-DF2-K and the step-step-up S-DF3-K offer larger woofers and deeper bass.-- EM

Pioneer Electronics USA makes a variety of home and car audio products, as well as a well-respected line of rear-projection TVs (RPTVs). Pioneer has been around since the days when reel-to-reel decks and turntables reigned supreme. The company has been a major player in virtually all of the consumer audio technologies including CD, laserdisc, DVD and complete home theater system packages. Although generally best known for its electronics, Pioneer also makes a full line of stereo loudspeakers.Pioneer's S-H151B-K is a two-way bass-reflex bookshelf model that sports a 6-1/2-inch paper cone woofer and a 2-1/2-inch paper cone tweeter. The company claims that the speaker can safely be driven by up to 100 watts of power into 8 ohms. It has a sensitivityof 90 dB. The magnetically shielded woofer cabinet is made of "100% solid" American Pine particleboard that's wrapped in black vinyl, and the black cloth grille is removable. If you want higher-quality bookshelf speakers that sound good, check out Infinity's RS-1 ($229/pair list).

If you gotta have your music but you're tight on space, Pioneer's bookshelf series may be an alternative to ditching your bed to make room for floorstanding speakers. The company is working to spiff up its speaker line; they've hired some ex-KEF engineers who are pursuing some bold new concepts in speaker design. The $259/pair list S-DF2-K sports Pioneer's ISO-Drive Baffle System. This design isolates the drivers from the cabinet by means of a floating baffle, thus reducing the transmission of vibration from the drivers to the cabinet. Just as the suspension system in your car isolates you from the bumps in the road, ISO-Drive technology helps your speakers deliver smoother sound. In addition to the ISO-Drive design, the 6-1/2-inch woofer and 1-inch tweeter are placed as close as possible for smoother off-axis response and improved stereo imaging. These speakers are magnetically shielded so you can put them near your video monitor without fear. They also have gold-plated five-way binding-post speaker terminals on the back -- a definite step up from the wire-clip speaker terminals found on the backs of many bookshelf loudspeakers. The S-DF2-K's black woodgrain cabinet supports a removable black grille and has a contoured vent for punchier bass. You won't get heart-stopping bass response from these speakers (frequency response is rated at 50 Hz-20 kHz), but there's probably enough here for a small office or dorm room.Like its peers in Pioneer's speaker line, the S-DF2-Ks are 8-ohm speakers. However, the step-up S-DF3-K offers a larger woofer for deeper bass.-- EM
