Clyde Williams (Sidney Poitier) and Billy Foster (Bill Cosby) belong to a community group called The Sons and Daughters of Shaka. The city of Atlanta has plans to take away the group's meeting place, and The Sons and Daughters of Shaka don't have the money to finance a new one. Clyde and Billy come up with a hair-brained scheme to raise money for a new lodge hall by fixing a boxing match. Their plan is to hypnotize a weakling boxer and make him think he's unbeatable. Then they'll place bets on his "sure-win" fights. Their idea is so crazy that it just might work. But if anyone finds out what they're up to, there will be hell to pay. Unusual names like "Biggie Smalls" (Calvin Lockhart), "Kansas City Mack" (John Amos), "Bootney Farnsworth" (Jimmie Walker), and "Fish an' Chips Freddie" (Morgan Roberts) add to the comic value of the film's line-up of characters. Cosby, with his usual raucous antics, is a perfect complement to Poitier's understated humor. Curtis Mayfield's music creates the right funky atmosphere for this film.

"Live Extracts" (04/13/2006) R&B Walker, Stewart, TresorLIVE EXTRACTS contains exclusive and previously unreleased material from live shows, rearranged by Stewart Walker in his home studio. Liner Note Author: Stewart Walker. Originally released on Stewart Walker's own Persona before being picked up for wider distribution via Tresor, Live Extracts delivers what it advertises, amounting to a brief mixed set of the producer's own works. During the past few years, Walker has gained a reputation for dishing out kinetic live sets that vary wildly from his studio-bound releases on Mille Plateaux, Tektite, Matrix, and several other labels. Here, he puts on two clinics at once -- how to produce bracing minimal techno that's rigid and fluid at once, and how to mix same. There's a new sound with each passing minute, and it all moves along with stealth force. If techno's dead -- as it apparently has been since long before this fellow released his first track -- nobody bothered to tell him. Walker's not just keeping it alive. Ever so slightly, he's pushing it into new directions. ~ Andy Kellman
