If you've been procrastinating about buying that new tape backup system, now is the time to stop. The VXA-1 tape drive pioneers not just one but three advances in tape reading, writing and restoring. The result is faster, more reliable and more transferable backup data. Discrete Packet Format (DPF) assigns addresses to packets of information, allowing them to be accurately copied on either end of the connection. Each packet contains 64 bytes of your data plus Error Correction Code (ECC). If one packet transfers faster than another, no problem - they can be read and reassembled in any order. 4-layer Reed Solomon ECC further enhances and ensures correct data transfer. Variable Speed Operation (VSO) eliminates "backhitching" experienced by conventional tape drives unable to adjust to changing data transfer rates. Instead of stopping and repositioning the tape when the demand for resources on your system changes, the VXA-1i actually accelerates or decelerates the tape advance mechanism, synchronizing it with the data transfer rate. This function decreases backup time, helps data integrity and dramatically increases media life. Finally, OverScan Operation (OSO) uses four separate heads to read packets of information. This independent reading compensates for differences in track shape and geometry, so any VXA tape can be read on any VXA drive, regardless of which drive created it. The VXA-1 drive has a 4Mbit buffer and can transfer data at up to 6MB/sec* (with a synchronous burst rate of 10MB/sec and an asynchronous burst rate of 5MB/sec) and searches at up to 256MB/sec*. Media comes in capacities of 66MB* (V17) and 24GB* (V6), has a shelf life of 30 years and a durability of 20,000 passes. The drive itself has an MTBF of 300,000 hours and a head life of 30,000 hours. It is fully compliant with TapeAlert specification.
