The top slot in Mitsubishi's 2000 line of rear-projection TVs is occupied by the groundbreaking WD-65000, which uses DLP (digital light processing) technology to create an image. This 65-inch widescreen TV comes equipped with a slew of video inputs to accommodate sources such as DVD players, HDTV (high-definition TV) tuners and even personal computers. The WD-65000 incorporates Mitsubishi's DPM3 video processor, which converts all incoming video signals to the 720 progressive format. Other video features include selectable color temperatures; A/V memory by input; and picture-outside-picture (POP), whereby you can split the wide screen in half to display two standard 4:3 images of the same size. There are also five "format modes" to display 4:3, widescreen and anamorphic sources, either with or without letterbox bars. The dual-tuner PIP (picture-in-picture) function enables you to keep your eyes on two channels at once. The rear panel hosts three A/V inputs with both composite video and S-video; one dedicated S-video input with stereo audio; two component video inputs, switchable between 480i and 480p to accommodate progressive-scan DVD players; and one HD component input, switchable between RGBHV and Y Pb Pr (480i, 480p, 1080i). This last input might be used for hookup to an external processor. Also on tap are two RF (cable/antenna) inputs, plus a VGA/SVGA/XGA input with accompanying analog stereo audio inputs. If you use the latter connection you can actually use the WD-65000 as a computer monitor. The front-panel A/V inputs include S-video. The WD-6500 has a good number of outputs too, including one RF jack, one monitor output with variable audio, a dual mono audio output for picture-in-picture, and three IR (infrared) emitter outputs for integration with other devices. This RPTV has an MTS stereo tuner and two front-firing two-way speakers with 6-inch woofers and 1.5-inch tweeters. The internal amplifier delivers 10 watts of power per channel. You can use the simulated surround sound setting and the bass and treble controls to tweak the sound. The V-Chip and TV lock time keep Junior away from objectionable material on TV. The universal remote control that ships with this TV is backlit and can command up to five devices. -- EM
