Panasonic's PT-56WXF95 is one of the few HDTVs (high-definition TVs) that can display 720 progressive natively, meaning without "upconversion" to 1080 interlaced.The PT-56WXF95 is also capable of displaying all other digital television (DTV) formats; 480p and 1080i are also shown natively. To receive these high-res signals, you'll need a set-top box with component video outputs (and native 720p pass-through). This TV employs a line doubler to upconvert NTSC (non-digital) TV to 480p. Of course, you can expect all the requisite picture enhancements for standard TV, such as a 3D-YC comb filter and a fine-pitch screen.Digital television is largely in the future, but DVD is here today. The PT-56WXF95's component video jacks can accept the output of a regular component-equipped DVD player, as well as of a progressive-scan DVD player. The rest of the this model's feature list is appropriately high-end. The dual-tuner PIP (picture-in-picture) function lets you watch a pair of 4:3 pictures side-by-side on the wide screen. Programmable channel search can put six channels into one half of the screen for previewing. There are extensive parental controls, including input lock-out, which makes it easy to keep the kids from playing video games. The supplied remote control is preprogrammed with "hundreds" of A/V component codes (though it can't learn new commands). Sound comes courtesy of a pair of two-way speakers and a 10-watt amplifier, and includes the requisite simulated surround feature.
