If bonuses like the Guide Plus+ program guide and dual-tuner PIP (picture-in-picture) float your boat, you should be looking at tricked-out RPTVs like this one. A few others in this size range include the 50SBX78B by Hitachi and the Panasonic PT51SX60.Videophiles will be pleased to see the 5044C's three-line digital comb filter (not to be confused with superior 3D-YC filters found on some other sets), which will cut down on artifacts when connected to sources through the S-video inputs. The 5044C's component input skips the filter entirely. Component video is the best video connection from DVD players blessed with a corresponding output. This set also lacks a color temperature setting, so you'll need to invest in professional calibration if you're interested in taming the infamously blue factory color temperature. Scan velocity modulation artificially sharpens the picture, but etown.com's experts feel it's a detriment to picture quality rather than an enhancement.This TV comes with a protective screen that also increases contrast (although again our experts feel the improvement is minimal). Philips says its Magnabrite lenses are better than other manufacturers', and adds a circuit called Incredible Picture. Regardless of the hype, the 5044C has enough resolution for digital DVD and satellite sources.The Guide Plus+ program guide shows a grid of programs with a preview window for the one currently selected, and also allows one-touchrecording of upcoming shows through VCRs equipped with VCR+. Dual-tuner picture-in-picture (PIP) lets you watch two programs at once, without using an external tuner from your VCR or cable box.Round back, you'll find all the jacks to integrate the 5044C into a home theater. There's also a set of A/V inputs on the side (including S-video), for quick connection of camcorders and video game consoles. Philips provides factory presets for video games, sports, movies and weak signals, and also throws in a custom slot that'll remember your personal settings. The remote has backlit volume, channel menu and surf buttons, and can control many brands of VCRs, DVD players, satellite receivers and cable boxes. -- DK
