For those who don't want to bother connecting the TV to the VCR, but who also don't want to sacrifice the nice features offered in both components these days, Panasonic offers the PV-C2780, a TV/VCR combo with a 27-inch TV and a 4-head hi-fi stereo VCR. With features like dual-tuner picture-in-picture (so you can do twice the channel surfing on one screen) and a digital comb filter to minimize dot crawl, you just might forget that this is a combo. The picture tube is dark-tinted (PanaBlack, as the company calls it) and thus should provide better contrast than from a traditional tube. Meanwhile, the illuminated universal remote control lets you operate all sorts of equipment -- even when the lights are off. It should be easy to get surround sound from this TV/VCR, as it has a built-in FM transmitter that sends the sound to any FM receiver. You can pipe the TV audio through a Dolby Pro-Logic receiver for surround sound, or you can transmit it to any FM radio headphone for wireless, late-night listening that won't disturb others. On the VCR side, the PV-C2780 has four heads for better images in still and slow motion modes than you'd get from a 2-head VCR. It also features auto clock set, program end search, with which you can skip to the very end of a taped program, and Commercial Skip, which lets you scan ahead one, two or three minutes during playback. VCR Plus+ makes programming the VCR as easy as typing in a TV show's numeric code, which can be found in your local TV listings. A relatively rare feature in TV/VCR combos is the built-in FM radio, which can be used with the alarm function (so you can wake up to a videotape, the TV or the radio) and the sleep function, so you can fall asleep to any of these sources. RCA's F27442 direct-view TV comes equipped with a 27-inch tube that's tinted to improve contrast. It also has some video extras, such as front-panel A/V inputs, the Guide Plus+ Gold program guide and selectable color temperatures. The rear panel sports A/V inputs and an RF (cable/antenna) input. The A/V inputs on the front panel are handy for hooking up video game consoles, camcorders or other A/V peripherals. Lastly, RCA's G-Link can be used to control VCRs and cable boxes.
