Use the first input to hook up a separate DTV tuner (see "Recommended Accessories" below) and watch breathtakingly clear 1080i HDTV broadcasts. Use the second to connect and enjoy maximum performance from a progressive-scan or standard DVD player. The transition to digital TV is gaining momentum, but we'll continue to watch regular analog programs for a while, too. Sony's solution is to combine a standard 4:3 aspect ratio screen with their ingenious 16:9 Enhanced viewing mode. When you select 16:9 Enhanced mode, the TV displays widescreen sources like HDTV and "anamorphic" DVDs in a 16:9 window. Sony's approach preserves maximum picture detail on widescreen formats because none of the scanning lines are wasted on the black bars above and below the picture area. Other advanced technology includes one of the industry's most advanced 3D digital comb filters, and Sony's Digital Reality Creation MultiFunction circuitry to help bridge the gap between conventional analog video and HDTV. This digital processing "upconverts" your analog video sources to 960i or 480p images have up to four times the picture data of the original signal. The KV-36FS12 is the least expensive of Sony's four 36-inch flat-screen Wega TVs for the year 2000. Behind the famously flat FD Trinitron tube lies a chassis filled with videophile delights. Highlights include a 16:9 enhanced, or "V-squeeze," mode that displays anamorphic DVDs with full vertical resolution; a 3-line digital comb filter to eliminate dot and cross-color artifacts; a color temperature control; and a Scan Velocity Modulation circuit that can be turned off for greater accuracy and resolution. On the audio side, the KV-36FS12's stereo speakers are powered by five watts each and fire out of the bottom front of the "small footprint" cabinet. A matrix surround feature helps widen the soundfield to better envelop the listener. The input/output complement is sufficient for small stand-alone systems and just right for use with an A/V receiver. There's a set of component video inputs for DVD, plus one S-video input and two A/V inputs. Front-panel A/V inputs are provided for quick hookup to camcorders or video game consoles. The audio output level can be variable or fixed. The KV-36FS12 has top-mounted controls and a universal remote control that is preprogrammed to operate a variety of other components. -- BN
