The 65H81 is perfect for letterboxed DVDs, VHS tapes and satellite broadcasts, eliminating the black bars that appear on the top and bottom of the screen. And the widescreen knockout is ready for the future of Digital TV with its ColorStream Pro and DTV Interface terminals.

Sixty-five inches of 16:9 screen equals HDTV-ready heaven. Toshiba's largest non-integrated high-definition set brings to the table a host of improvements over last year's model, for almost $1000 less. If you've got the space for the 65X81 and a progressive-scan DVD player, you may not even notice the scarcity of HDTV programming today. If you don't have the space, Toshiba makes a pair of smaller HD-ready TVs.The "HDTV-ready" 65X81 can display digital program material in either the 1080i or 480p format. Material already in those formats is displayed without alteration, while standard analog TV and NTSC video sources, like cable or a typical DVD player, is automatically upconverted to 480p using Toshiba's IDSC (Intelligent Digital Scan Conversion).A pair of "ColorStream HD" component inputs are provided 'round back. They can accept HDTV from Toshiba's set-top HDTV decoder box (due late 1999, pricing TBD), a progressive-scan 480p signal from progressive-scan DVD players (such as Toshiba's own SD9100, or standard component video signals. Video perfectionists will be glad to hear they can set Black Level (at the input) for either DVD-video or HDTV.Since the 65X81 uses 7-inch CRTs, it can't resolve every pixel of a 1080i image -- not that it won't look significantly better than any analog RPTV. Toshiba developed a special PowerFocus HD lens system and HD CRTs to handle the extra resolution demands of digital, and threw in its TheaterWide-brandedscreen and protection screen for good measure.Aside from the picture, this TV has oodles of extras. Using that wide expansive screen, Multi-Window Dual-Tuner PIP/POP (picture-in-picture/picture-outside-picture) can put up a pair of programs, one moving picture and six or nine preview stills, or the standard little box in the corner. You can watch regular 4:3 TV in any of five modes.Oodles? The prodigious sound system offers faux surround sound, 28 watts of muscle, and a center channel input so you can have the 65X81 serve as your system's center channel speaker. The front A/V input has S-video. The remote is backlit and smarter than you; it can learn the IR commands of your other remotes.
