"Pirates Of The Caribbean" (07/22/2003) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Walt DisneyOriginal score composed by Klaus Badelt. Composer: Glen Lajeski. Personnel: Heitor Teixeira Pereira (guitar); Martin Tillman (cello); Fred Selden (flute); Emil Richards (percussion). Audio Mixers: Salmm "Scallywag" Andrew; Alan Meyerson. The soundtrack for Pirates of the Caribbean was originally composed by Alan Silvestri, who left the project prior to the film's release. Credited to Klaus Badelt, a prot?g? of Hans Zimmer, it was hastily assembled at the last minute, resulting in a paint-by-numbers exercise in big studio fluff that required the work of several unnamed composers. Badelt and his mysterious co-conspirators have created a schizophrenic pastiche of Hollywood excess -- much like the film itself -- disguised as a traditional score. The swashbuckling is propelled by an instantly unmemorable -- albeit rousing -- motif that contains bits of every action score in existence. "Fog Bound" starts off with a sprightly Celtic flair before dissolving into a generic Jerry Bruckheimer wash of keyboard strings and synthetic flute patches. This is the case for much of the record, resulting in inspired flashes of creativity here and there. ~ James Christopher Monger An adventure movie in the grand old style, albeit a modern one featuring the quirky talents of Johnny Depp, the 2003 film PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN seems tailor-made for a good old-fashioned orchestral film score. Fortunately, that's just what composer Klaus Badelt gives it. You'll find no pop-group promotional tie-ins here, just plenty of evocative mood music that captures the drama and panoramic vistas of this summer blockbuster.

"Black Rain" (09/21/1995) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Virgin Records (USA)The soundtrack for the film BLACK RAIN features a wide diversity of styles, from the R&B of singles "The Way You Do the Things You Do" and "Back to Life" to the punk of Iggy Pop's "Livin' on the Edge of the Night." The first half of the soundtrack to Ridley Scott's Black Rain is a cobbled-together collection of songs that really have little to do with the movie (something that had become the norm during the latter half of the '80s). It doesn't seem to be so blatantly an attempt to spin off radio hits. Soul II Soul's "Back to Life" is included, but was already climbing the charts upon this soundtrack's release (and its inclusion here is a different mix). Iggy Pop's "Livin' on the Edge of the Night" is catchy, restrained hard rock foreshadowing his mainstream breakthrough a year later with "Candy" and UB40's "The Way You Do the Things You Do" wouldn't chart until released on their album in 1990. The David Paich-produced "I'll Be Holding On," a power ballad so formulaic that his band Toto wouldn't have touched it, seems to be the bid for airplay and features Gregg Allman providing the overwrought vocals. The second half is a four-part "Black Rain Suite" which fits the taut, suspenseful plot well as composer Hans Zimmer merges electronics with Japanese instrumentation to good effect. ~ Tom Demalon

"Fear of a Black Hat [PA]" (04/26/2005) R&B Original Soundtrack, Avatar RecordsOriginal score composed by Rusty Cundieff. Engineers: Paul Arnold, Fred Howard, Conley Abrams. Originally released on PolyGram. Audio Mixer: John Can Nest. Recording information: The Rock House (1994). Director: Rusty Cundieff. Rusty Cundieff's satirical mockumentary Fear of a Black Hat was billed as rap's answer to This Is Spinal Tap, and while it didn't quite match that film's brilliance -- partly because it was admittedly derivative, partly because it was less subtle and its dialogue less dense -- its sendups of hip-hop clich?s and personalities were deadly accurate and frequently hilarious. Nearly every song on the soundtrack was co-written by Cundieff, and most parody specific songs or artists with wicked glee. What's just as impressive, however, is the attention paid to the variety of production styles among those artists. It's no mean feat to replicate sounds as diverse as those of Snoop Dogg, C+C Music Factory, PM Dawn, N.W.A., LL Cool J, Public Enemy, and Licensed to Ill-era Beastie Boys, but Fear of a Black Hat apes them all in elaborate detail. That's what sets it apart from the similarly conceived CB4, and that's what makes it such an entertaining listen even apart from the film. ~ Steve Huey

"Men in Black [Original Score]" (12/09/1997) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Columbia (USA)Danny Elfman's score for the blockbuster sci-fi comedy Men in Black ranks among his best work, capturing the ridiculous, tongue-in-cheek thrills of the film with ease. It has the same oversized, cartoonish appeal of Elfman's work for Tim Burton, but with a less whimsical flair, which suits the action film. And even though the music perfectly suits the film, it also works as an individual entity on its own, which is what makes the record a satisfying listen. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"Black Emanuelle's Groove" (09/01/1998) Rock & Pop Original Soundtrack, Dagored (USA)Original score composed by Nico Fidenco. As lounge music experienced an international revival during the 1990s, European record companies discovered that Italian musicians had produced a lot of interesting lounge music during the 1960s and 1970s in the form of soundtracks. An interesting reissue in this vein is Black Emanuelle's Groove, a compilation that collects music from a series of sexy Italian exploitation films inspired by the success of the international hit Emmanuelle. This series, known as the "Black Emanuelle" films, chronicled the erotic adventures of a jet-setting photojournalist played by the exotic Laura Gemser, and became a staple attraction at drive-in's and on cable television. One of the most distinctive elements of these films was their music: each film had a score composed by Nico Fidenco that mixed the jazzy, soulful style of Italian lounge music with exotic touches determined by the film's setting and plot. For instance, Emanuelle Nera had a tropical setting, so cues like "Samba Safari" and "Hawaiian Sand" work tribal-sounding percussion and steel guitar into their 1970's lounge sound. Other cuts like "Emanuelle in America (Sweet)" and "A Picture of Love (Instr.)" combine silky string arrangements with wah-wah guitars and a disco-style rhythm section to create a distinctly 1970s-flavor of romantic mood music. The tempo is occasionally perked up by an action cue like "Eternal Anguish," which layers dissonant horns and tense percussion over a programmed synthesizer riff. The end result is a collection of instrumentals that are undeniably kitschy yet too skillfully composed and catchy to be dismissed. This unique combination of factors makes Black Emanuelle's Groove a perfect pick for European lounge fans and anyone who likes exotic soundtracks. ~ Donald A. Guarisco
