"Band of Brothers" (08/28/2001) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Original score composed and conducted by Michael Kamen. Performed by The London Metropolitan Orchestra. Michael Kamen is a master at capturing nostalgia, especially when the age in question is the bittersweet "tie a yellow ribbon" landscape of World War II. For the HBO mini-series Band of Brothers, Kamen re-visits much of the same territory he explored with fellow sepia-tone junkie Roger Waters on Pink Floyd's The Wall and The Final Cut. Alternately tragic and uplifting, Band of Brothers is a raw, patriotic, and wistfully elegiac tome of swelling choirs, salvation army brass band, and melodious strings that compliment the series' balanced depiction of the horrors of war and the unpredictable sweetness of humanity. ~ James Christopher Monger

"Little Women [Original Score]" (01/10/1995) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Original score written by Thomas Newman. Personnel: Claire Danes, Trini Alvarado, Kirsten Dunst (vocals). Audio Mixer: Shawn Murphy. Recording information: EMI Abbey Road Studios, London, England; Whitfield Street Recording Studios, London, England. Editor: Bill Bernstein. Arranger: Thomas Pasatieri. Largely overshadowed by The Shawshank Redemption, Thomas Newman's other Academy Award-nominated score from 1994, Little Women nevertheless remains one of the finest efforts of the composer's career, its unsentimental pastoral beauty vividly evoking Louisa May Alcott's indelible frontier world. Employing period instruments including piano, flute and strings, Little Women boasts a homespun charm that wonderfully complements Newman's warm, lilting melodies -- perhaps the most telling tribute one can pay this music is that the original compositions fit interchangeably with the soundtrack's public domain entries from Francis Johnson, Claudio Grafulla and Conrad Kocher, capturing the sound and spirit of early Americana to perfection. ~ Jason Ankeny

Recording information: TODD-AO Scoring Stage. Unknown Contributor Role: Nico Carmine. John Debney's score for John Favreau's Christmas comedy Elf is, like the movie, a hyperstylized and witty celebration of all things Christmas. The largely orchestral score sounds like a parody of the incessant holiday Muzak heard in shopping malls around that time of the year, particularly on tracks like "Main Title" and "Papa Elf." Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite is another major influence, particularly on the tiptoeing Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies-like "A Stroll With Buddy" and "Weird Wonderland." Tracks like "Buddy's Theme" and "Santa's in Trouble" occasionally dip into schmaltz, but for the most part the score manages to be festive and funny without becoming too sugary, particularly on "A Snowman's Advice." Humorous cues such as "A Walk in the Park" and "Attack of the Little People" owe quite a bit to classic cartoon music, particularly the work of Carl Stalling. While it's not quite as distinctive as Elf itself, Debney's score is still funny and apt for the film, and may appeal to some of its fans outside that context. ~ Heather Phares

"Evelyn" (11/26/2002) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Decca (USA)Original score composed by Stephen Endelman. Recorded at Angel Studios, Sony Music Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by Pierce Brosnan. Audio Mixer: Phil Bodger. Recording information: Angel Studios, Islington, London, England; Sony Music Studios, London, England. Editor: Christopher Kennedy. Actor Pierce Brosnan's production company is behind Evelyn, the "based-on-a-true-story" tale of a father in 1953 Ireland fighting for custody of his four children. Brosnan also stars, giving himself, as he puts it in his liner notes, "a chance to play emotional beats that I felt had been lacking from my work." (Guess the James Bond movies only give him a chance to play action beats.) For the low-key, heart-tugging film, Brosnan brought in composer Stephen Endelman, who contributes a score full of Irish folk music and calm orchestral cues. The soundtrack album is bookended with vocal tracks, starting with a newly written Van Morrison song with a venerable title ("Sitting on Top of the World") that is in his typical ballad style, but no less appealing for that, and ending with Norwegian singer Sissel's attractive "Angel Rays." Four tracks are actually played by the Irish group the Grogan Family, and two of those feature vocals by Brosnan, who, from the sound of it, is unlikely to branch out into a singing career anytime soon, but seems to enjoy his chance to play musical beats, too. ~ William Ruhlmann

"The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring - The Complete Recordings" (12/13/2005) Rock & Pop Original Soundtrack, RepriseOriginal Soundtrack/Howard Shore: Edward Ross, Elizabeth Fraser, London Oratory School Schola, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Mabel Faletolu. This nicely packaged box set, spread out over three CDs and a DVD-Audio (which features the score in Surround Sound), contains the complete score for FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, the first film in the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. Composer Howard Shore's sweepingly epic, award-winning music for the film is presented in its entirety, and the greater scope of the box set, not to mention the stunning sound, reveal the work in its true grandeur. Naturally, Enya's "May It Be" (which was nominated for an Oscar) is here as well, making this a hefty souvenir for enthusiasts of the film.

"Ghost and Mrs. Muir" (09/23/1997) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Varese Sarabande (USA)All music written and conducted by Bernard Herrmann. One of Bernard Herrmann's earliest scores, the soundtrack to Joseph L. Mankiewicz's 1947 movie THE GHOST & MRS. MUIR is arguably better known than the film itself. With its lush, dreamy orchestral pieces, the album gives listeners a sweeping sense of the fantastic, from the swooning "Prelude" to the whimsical "Bedtime" to the melancholy "Sorrow." This soundtrack is highly recommended for aficionados of Herrmann's dynamic and dramatic compositions, especially as an early example of the genius that he would later fully embody in his work for, among others, Alfred Hitchcock.

Recording information: 20th Century Fox, Newman Recording Stage, Los Angeles,. Photographer: David James. Arrangers: Geoff Zanelli; Blake Neely; Hans Zimmer; Trevor Morris. Hans Zimmer's score for Edward Zwick's samurai epic The Last Samurai mixes his own densely composed style with Japanese instruments and melodies, resulting in a brooding, atmospheric collection of music. Shakuhachi and other flutes, koto, and taiko drums make their presence known throughout the score, most effectively on compositions like "A Way of Life," which begins as a reflective duet for flute and strings before swelling into an ominous but majestic melody. "Spectres in the Fog" is another compelling mix of beauty and violence, starting with a delicate koto melody and rolling drums before crashing percussion and sawing strings turn the mood from bittersweet to battle-ready. These drums of war and battle cries increase as the score unfolds, making tracks such as "Safe Passage," "Ronin," and "Red Warrior" nearly as tense and striking outside of the film's context as they are in it. The score's quieter moments are just as thoughtfully crafted, with "Taken," "A Hard Teacher," and "Idyll's End" adding restraint and balancing the more explosive tracks. The Last Samurai flows from track to track seamlessly; indeed, its lengthy, multi-part compositions give it the feel of one long, shifting composition. Its Asian melodies and emphasis on percussion are reminiscent of Tan Dun's score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, but this score is both more somber and more lush, particularly on its closing pieces, "The Way of the Sword" and "A Small Measure of Peace." Both of these tracks mix gravity and hope into a somber conclusion to a somber but expertly crafted score that ranks among Zimmer's finest work. ~ Heather Phares

"Pianist" (11/26/2002) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Producers: Stanislaw Dybowski, Marcus Herzog, John Timperly. Roman Polanski's THE PIANIST tells the story of Wladislaw Szpilman, a Polish Jew and classical pianist who survived the horrors of the Warsaw Ghetto. This collection of music from the film is comprised almost exclusively of piano works by Frederic Chopin. His music was an essential part of Szpilman's repertoire and it played a crucial role in his life. As Polanski states, "For us Poles, Chopin symbolizes revolution...His music is our music - it's like mother's milk. It is what gave Szpilman strength and courage." Szpilman was performing the Nocturne in C-sharp Minor in a Warsaw radio station when the Nazis bombed the city, and in a critical scene late in the movie he plays the Ballade No. 1 in G Minor in the face of what he believes to be certain doom. In addition to these works, the album includes the Waltz No. 3 in A Minor, the Prelude in E Minor, and the Grande Polonaise, among others, all beautifully rendered by fellow countryman Janusz Olejniczak. A bonus comes in the form of the final track: a rare recording from 1948 by Szpilman himself of the Mazurka in A Minor. This thoughtfully conceived program eloquently pays homage to Szpilman's memory.

"Dreamer" (10/18/2005) Rock & Pop Original Soundtrack, Sony Music Distribution (USA)Composer: John Debney. Composer John Debney (Sin City, Passion of the Christ) may seem an odd choice to score a film about a horse trainer, his precocious daughter, and their quest for the Breeder's Cup, but he rises to the occasion with a rousing piece of recycled Americana that's sure to bring a lump in the throat to even the grumpiest moviegoer. Like Mark Isham's similarly predictable score for the 2004 hockey drama Miracle, Debney represents the best of the genre, utilizing a not-so-subtle blend of soft pianos, warm strings (courtesy of Indiana-born violin wunderkind Joshua Bell), and patriotic brass motifs to paint a rural backdrop reminiscent of both Aaron Copeland's "Appalachian Spring" and The Natural-era Randy Newman. ~ James Christopher Monger

Recording information: Air Studios, Lyndurst Hall, London, England; Avatar Studio; Gimmic Studio, Paris, France; Suite Sixteen Studio, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Editor: Roy Prendergast. Unknown Contributor Role: Mel Wesson. Patrick Doyle's score to Alfonso Cuaron's contemporary update of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations is a provocative amalgam of styles that results in a continually intriguing record. Working with a variety of different musicians -- including guitarist John Williams, pianist Cyrus Chestnut, saxophonist James Carter, whistler Carey Wilson and vocalists C?saria ?vora, Miriam Stockley, Kiri Te Kanawa and Tori Amos -- Doyle has created a rich tapestry of sounds that draws from classical music, traditional film scores, opera, flamenco, Latin music, pop, new age and jazz, among many others. While some segments don't work as well as others, the album is an adventurous, unpredictable score that's welcome in an era of overblown, schmaltzy and underwritten soundtracks. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Sideways [Digipak]

"Sideways [Digipak]" (10/12/2004) Rock & Pop Original Soundtrack, New Line RecordsComposer: Rolfe Kent. Personnel: Dan Higgins, Dave Carpenter, Alex Acu?a, Ron Feuer, Will Kennedy , Sideways Jazz Orchestra. Scotland-born composer Rolfe Kent (About Schmidt and Nurse Betty) doles out an effervescent jazz-laced score for Alexander Payne's winsome comedy Sideways, a character study following a frolicking trio of friends celebrating the end of bachelorhood in the region of California where wine is king. Kent's soundtrack is more like a bubbling over glass of champagne than a pinot noir. With wistful, accordion-led gems like "Los Olivos" and "Chasing the Golfers," it brings to mind the works of Yann Tiersan (Am?lie) and Greencard-era Hans Zimmer. Kent fills the green valleys of Sonoma county with blurry pastels and the warm, deep reds of evening with terrific ease, painting a whimsical world of melancholy with '60s-infused beatnik motifs -- "I'm Not Drinking Any #@%!$ Merlot!" borrows the melody from "Taste of Honey" with infectious results. Sideways may not move any mountains, but it sure would make the drive through them a lot sunnier. Recommended. ~ James Christopher Monger

"Dangerous Beauty" (02/24/1998) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Restless Records (USA)Original score composed by George Fenton. Dangerous Beauty boasts a splendor and refinement that is well matched to the film's 16th century Venetian setting. George Fenton's score is romantic but never sappy. Few contemporary composers excel so consistently with this kind of light classical approach, even if the music's sheer agreeability renders it an unchallenging and even forgettable listen. Indeed, while Fenton's unpretentious approach demands praise, one wishes he would deviate from formula and produce a score of genuine complexity and daring. Too much of Dangerous Beauty passes by without impact, and while it's unquestionably lovely, it doesn't stick to the ribs. ~ Jason Ankeny
