"TV Land Presents Favorite TV Theme Songs" (08/20/2002) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Rhino Records (USA)Compilation producers: Karen Ahmed, Hillary Bratton, Reggie Collins. Includes liner notes by Tim Scanlin. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Over the years, there have been plenty of compilations of television theme songs, but for scope, selection, and value, none beat Rhino's 2002 collection, TV Land Presents Favorite TV Theme Songs. Containing a generous 40 tracks, the disc runs the gamut from I Love Lucy to The Golden Girls (after the '80s, theme songs kind of faded away from network TV, replaced by jingles on Seinfeld and Frasier, though Friends, The Simpsons, The Sopranos, and Six Feet Under all had themes worthy of inclusion in a future volume of this kind), and it hits nearly all of the big, memorable themes, including The Twilight Zone, Bonanza, Batman, Star Trek, The Brady Bunch, "Movin' On Up," The Rockford Files, Barney Miller, Chico and the Man, "Theme from the Dukes of Hazzard," and "Theme from Greatest American Hero (Believe it or Not)," among others. Really, the only major theme missing is that from WKRP In Cincinnati, but given the number of tracks on this compilation, it's hard to carp about absences, particularly since the fidelity is about as good as it could be. This isn't the kind of collection that you'd listen to all that often, but it's nice to have it around whenever you need a fix of nostalgia. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

"SpongeBob Squarepants: Original Theme Highlights [EP]" (08/14/2001) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Jive Records (USA)Compilation producers: Albie Hecht, Stephen Hillenburg. He's yellow, porous, and lives in the undersea community of Bikini Bottom. It's not a ripe piece of coral, but SpongeBob SquarePants, an animated sponge whose fans include tots, college students, and celebrities. SpongeBob's cult popularity exploded in 2001, surpassing the Rugrats as the most popular cartoon on Nickelodeon. Voiced by comedian Tom Kenny (best known as part of the ensemble that made up the cast of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross' HBO sketch program Mr. Show), SpongeBob is a goodhearted naif whose friends include the dimwitted Patrick Star and adventure-seeking squirrel Sandy Cheeks. Chock full of offbeat humor reminiscent of Ren & Stimpy, The Simpsons, and The Uncle Floyd Show, it's no surprise to find an eclectic array of musical guests contributing to the cartoon's first two short seasons. Among the famous names are alt-rock pranksters Ween, their poppy PSA about learning how to tie shoes ("Loop de Loop"), Junior Brown's twangy ode to the Lone Star State ("Texas Song"), and Pantera's grind-core instrumental linked to Sandy's winter preparations ("Pre-Hibernation"). Other highlights include the show's sea chanty theme song and SpongeBob's duet with the nefarious Plankton on the infectious and hilarious "F.U.N. Song."

"The Genie [Remaster]" (05/02/2006) Jazz Instrument James, Bob, Koch Records (USA)All tracks have been digitally remastered. Personnel: Bob James (keyboards, synthesizer); Eric Gale, Steve Khan (guitar); Tom Scott (saxophone); Gary King (bass guitar); Steve Gadd (drums); Ralph MacDonald (percussion). On THE GENIE, Bob James features his great compositions that were used as incidental and theme music for the long-running television series, TAXI. James is joined here by a tremendous cast of musicians. In addition to "Angela," TAXI's mellow and very recognizable main theme and also a highlight of James' TOUCHDOWN, James and his comrades jam on several great tracks. Since so many of the tunes were only used as snippets on the television series, only the most diehard TAXI fans would recognize them from the show. Familiar or not, however, these cuts carry with them the feeling of background music, as opposed to being a typical James recording. Most noteworthy are "Brooklyn Heights Boogie," "The Genie" and "Groove for Julie." Perfect driving music.

"One Hundred Greatest TV Themes [Box]" (08/27/2002) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Silva AmericaAs the title suggests, Silva's One Hundred Greatest TV Themes collects over four decades' worth of memorable theme songs, from The A-Team to The X Files. Unfortunately, the set doesn't include any original versions of themes. Instead, ensembles such as the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, the Daniel Caine Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Orchestra do their best to recreate the sound of the originals, but the results are mixed. Predictably, the songs that were more orchestrally-based to begin with, such as the sweeping, string-driven themes to Dynasty and Dallas sound great, while some of the more rock or electronic-based pieces like the themes to Batman, M*A*S*H, Knight Rider, and The X-Files are clearly inferior to the versions that open each of these shows. However, most of the themes work pretty well; highlights include the themes from The A-Team, Perry Mason, Peter Gunn, Hawaii 5-0, Taxi, Twin Peaks, and Magnum, P.I.. The collection also features lots of great themes from British shows such as Thunderbirds, The Avengers, The Prisoner, and Red Dwarf. It also pays extra attention to the music of science fiction series over the years, collecting the themes to the first Star Trek series, as well as Deep Space Nine and Voyager, not to mention the themes to Doctor Who, Battlestar Galactica, and The Outer Limits. While its emphasis is definitely on quality rather than quantity, One Hundred Greatest TV Themes still has enough worthwhile moments that diehard TV geeks might appreciate it. ~ Heather Phares

"Avengers & Other Top Sixties TV Themes" (02/05/2002) Oldies Original Soundtrack, Castle Music Ltd. (UK)Recorded between 1960 & 1969. Includes liner notes by Michael Richardson. Presenting itself as the ultimate kitsch '60s collection, this album contains works by definitive soundtrack artists such as Tony Hatch, Cyril Stapleton, and Laurie Johnson. Covering a plethora of TV themes (as the title indicates) these soundtracks span a decade of drama, sport, cartoon, and soap opera, and will evoke images that appeal to the nostalgic, as well as the kitsch affiliate. The main purpose of this album is to accompany theme nights, fancy dress parties, and boozing sessions, rather than to be taken entirely seriously. The value for money of the 60 tracks makes up for any discrepancies or omissions in the overall package.

"Beretta 70: Themes from Italian Police Films" (08/20/2007) R&B Original Soundtrack, Crippled Dick Hot WaxBERETTA 70 is a collection of themes from Italian police films of the '70s. After Dirty Harry became a worldwide hit, filmmakers all over the globe sought to get in on the "tough cop" movie sweepstakes. Italy was one of the foremost proponents of this style of filmmaking, refashioning it into a genre called Poliziotteschi that focused on tough cops, vicious criminals, and tons of brutal action. These films were also notable for their scores, which replaced traditional orchestrated film music with a driving, beat-oriented sound that drew in equal measure from rock, funk, and jazz. This unique sound gets a much-deserved showcase in Beretta 70, a compilation that includes tracks from 12 Italian Poliziotteschi films released between 1971 and 1980. In the tradition of Crippled Dick Hot Wax's other soundtrack comps Vampyros Lesbos and Schulmadchen Report, a listener can fully enjoy Beretta 70 without being familiar with any of the films. The focus is mainly on rhythmic instrumental tracks, yet the styles of the composers varies so much from track to track that Beretta 70 never feels like it is repeating itself: for instance, Franco Micalizzi's "Folk & Violence" updates mandolin-oriented Italian folk sounds with a pounding bas sline and a huge, jazzy brass section while Paolo Vasile's "Escape" goes for a streamlined, electronic minimalist approach that uses subtle rhythm guitar scratches to flesh out a languid synthesizer soundscape. Sprinkled in amongst these instrumental are a handful of vocals-oriented numbers that are just as varied as the non-vocal excursions: "Mark" by Sammy Barbot is a funky, up-tempo tune with exuberantly soulful vocals that sounds like the great lost '70s cop show theme song, while "Man Before Your Time," from Bullfrog, is a moody, tragic power ballad that features a dazzling guitar solo reminiscent of David Gilmour's best work with Pink Floyd. All in all, Beretta 70 is a solid, positively addictive collection that holds up easily to repeated listens. Anyone who enjoyed the Easy Tempo compilations or Ennio Morricone's pop-oriented scores will definitely want to give this compilation a spin. ~ Donald A. Guarisco

"Murder Is My Beat: Classic Film Noir Themes & Scenes" (06/24/1997) Soundtracks Original Soundtrack, Turner Classic Movies MusicOriginal scores composed by Miklos Rozsa, Max Steiner, Adolph DEutsch, David Raskin, Roy Webb & Paul Sawtell, George Bassman, Andre Previn, Franz Waxman, and Anthony Collins. Compilation producers: Ian Whitcomb, Julie D'Angelo, James Austin, David McLees. Includes liner notes by Ian Whitcomb. Digitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics, Los Angeles, California). The men behind the music for some of the moodiest movies ever filmed were essential in creating film noir's dark and foreboding atmosphere. The versatile Max Steiner, who wrote for many of Hollywood's blockbusters including GONE WITH THE WIND and KING KONG is well represented on this collection. Also included are many other composers who plied their trade in the world of "B" movies, including Roy Webb (MURDER MY SWEET), George Bassman (THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE), and Adolph Deutsch (THE MALTESE FALCON). Replete with sound effects (car brakes squealing, gun shots, loud, ominous silences), dialogue, and constant foreboding, this disc provides a colorful journey through the jaunty, dangerous, sexy, and jazzy world that is Hollywood's stylized view of the life's seedy underside. MURDER IS MY BEAT generates a visual experience without even having to turn on your VCR or DVD player.
