"More Delicious Spaghetti Western [Slipcase]" (08/08/2000) Rock & Pop Original Soundtrack, Dagored (USA)Performers include: Ennio Morricone, Piero Piccioni, Luis Bacalov, Armando Trovajoli, Riz Ortolani, Alessandro Alessandroni. Sequels to popular instrumental compilations often fall prey to the law of diminishing returns, but More Delicious Spaghetti Western proves an exception to that rule. In fact, this compilation of cues from spaghetti western soundtracks manages to improve on its predecessor because it offers a wider selection of composers and film scores. Although its track listing ignores crucial Sergio Leone classics like A Fistful of Dollars and Once Upon a Time in the West, More Delicious Spaghetti Western still manages to present a pretty comprehensive selection of important composers who contributed to this genre. Most importantly, this album includes four tracks by Ennio Morricone, the king of the spaghetti western film score. The best of these tracks are "Il Mio Nome E Nessuno," a flute-led instrumental that blends gentle acoustic guitar accompaniment with a sprightly, playful choral arrangement, and "Vamos A Matar Companeros," a rousing and fast-paced track that is built around Spanish choral vocals but throws in a humorous, head-spinning instrumental break that trots out every spaghetti western soundtrack device in the book (reverbed electric guitar, wailing voices, martial horn blasts, etc.). More Delicious Spaghetti Western also illustrates how musically diverse this style of music could be within its stylistic constraints: "Una Ragione Per Vivere E Una Per Morire" applies militaristic elements that would be at home in a war movie (drum corps-like percussion, reveille-style horns) into its western style, and "Sartana" grafts spaghetti western guitar work onto an organ-driven melody that owes more to 1960s lounge pop than it does to traditional western movie music. All in all, More Delicious Spaghetti Western is a strong and catchy collection music that will appeal to soundtrack lovers and lounge music fanatics alike. ~ Donald A. Guarisco

"From Alamo to El Dorado, Vol. 2" (06/10/1997) Oldies Original Soundtrack, Bear Family (Germany)Recorded between 1948 & 1972. While the first volume in this wonderful series focused on TV and movie themes in the Western vernacular, such as Bonanza, Gunfight at the OK Corral, et al., this second collection digs deeper into the American kitsch experience -- as envisioned through the eyes of a German family's view of popular culture in the States. There are no less than 23 selections here that vary in range and quality from Nat "King" Cole and Stubby Kaye's bizarre rough and rowdy theme song for the Jane Fonda vehicle Cat Ballou, to Jose Feliciano's rockabilly singing of "Old Turkey Buzzard" from the film MacKenna's Gold, to Glen Campbell's gorgeous "A Man With True Grit" from the film True Grit. There's a vibe that runs through all of this seemingly disparate material, and that is how the Western theme song evolved from a simple Hollywood instrumental with lots of sound effects to the aftermath of Ennio Morricone's adaptations for spaghetti Westerns by Sergio Leone to the involvement of show tune composers such as Elmer Bernstein and Dan Black in the genre. There are traditional contributors of course, such as Tex Ritter with his theme to Wichita, the Sons of the Pioneers with "Sugarfoot," and Johnny Gregory with his theme from Bronco. But there was also an era when singers like Wayne Newton contributed his silky Vegas voice to the series Stagecoach and Andy Williams and his champagne throat sang on the soundtrack for the John Huston/Paul Newman vehicle The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean. Thankfully, there is also a fine rendition here from the original released soundtrack to the television program Wagon Train, and Dean Martin weighs in with "The Wind, The Wind" from the film Pardners -- yes, it was a comedy. The package, unlike other Bear Family packages, contains literally no liner notes, but the sound has been remastered expertly and the booklet includes literally dozens of reproductions of movie posters (mostly German versions!) and stills from both film and TV. This is every bit as essential as the first volume and even more off the beaten track. ~ Thom Jurek

"Western Pansori" (02/15/2005) Soundtracks Morin, Cyril, MilanPersonnel includes: Cyril Morin (vocals, piano, celeste, bass, programming); Vidya Rao, Kakoli Sengupta (vocals); Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra. Personnel: Cyril Morin (vocals, classical guitar, celesta, programming); Kakoli Sengupta, Vidya Rao (vocals); Tenzin G?npo (tibetan horn); Ana Rago, Romain Fournier (keyboards, programming). Ensemble: Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra. This intriguing outing features multi-instrumentalist Cyril Morin on vocals, piano, celeste, bass, and programming in conjunction with the Bulgarian Symphony Orchestra. Vocalists Vidya Rao and Kakoli Sengupta lend their pipes to the project as well with Middle Eastern and Asian-inflected singing on tracks like "Rivers on My Skin" and "Fragments of You." The lush, enveloping sound of the orchestra is used primarily for color and texture, and this balances nicely with Morin's instrumental contributions, which tend to lean toward the experimental in phrasing and execution. The music is quite adventurous, falling somewhere between film music, 20th-century chamber music, and dreamy ambient mindscapes, creating an overall listening experience that is as dramatic as it is uniquely compelling.

"My Delicious Spaghetti Western" (09/01/1998) Rock & Pop Original Soundtrack, Dagored (USA)Performers include: Francesco De Masi, Bruno Nicolai, Lallo Gori. Original score composed by Nico Fidenco. In the 1960s, Italian filmmakers reinvented the Western genre by adding a gritty starkness and the occasional bit of surrealism that resulted in the birth of a new genre dubbed the spaghetti Western. One of the most distinctive features of these movies were their soundtracks, which added rock & roll elements like bass and heavily-reverbed electric guitar to their orchestral sweep to create a sound that was grand and punchy all at once. This unique sound received a fitting and well-deserved tribute in 1998 with the release of the compilation My Delicious Spaghetti Western. It contains a generous selection of tracks that illustrate the stylistic hallmarks and hard-hitting effectiveness of the spaghetti Western genre. Good examples include "Gli Fumavano Le Colt...Lo Chiamavano Camposanto (Pt. 1)," which allows a whistler to take the lead over a restless backdrop of staccato strings and Gregorian-chanting voices, and "Fargo's Gang," which plays off a mournful, flamenco-style acoustic guitar lead against an atmospheric orchestral backdrop with a beat. However, My Delicious Spaghetti Western runs into some problems with its selection of tracks. The first problem is that its selection is drawn entirely from a handful of little-known obscurities like Buckaroo and Il Segno Del Coyote instead of internationally-known films like Django and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The second and biggest problem with My Delicious Spaghetti Western is that it contains no tracks by the undisputed king of the spaghetti Western soundtrack, Ennio Morricone. Despite these selection problems, My Delicious Spaghetti Western works as a vivid portrait of the spaghetti Western's musical style and benefits from a track-to-track consistency that makes it easy to listen to all the way through. While it isn't a comprehensive compilation of the style of music, My Delicious Spaghetti Western is both a solid introduction to this kind of music and a guaranteed hit for spaghetti Western enthusiasts. ~ Donald A.
