Rarely seen in America, THE GIRL GETTERS is a great lost document of mod 60's British culture, utilizing the talents of many artists who went on to more celebrated accomplishments. Michael Winner (DEATH WISH) directs the late Oliver Reed, who stars as Tinker, the leader of a gang of blazer-and-necktie sporting youths who are on vacation at a seaside resort- picking fights, terrorizing tourists, and leaving a trail of disheveled young females in their path. The ruggedly handsome Tinker, however, is not prepared for one of his many young female conquests to capture his heart. Nicholas Roeg (PERFORMANCE, THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH), does a creative job behind the camera in this captivating, authentic precursor to "Quadrophenia."

Best known for playing muse to Andy Warhol, Edie Sedgwick was a dazzling young socialite who found herself at the apex of the pop art scene in 1960s New York. In FACTORY GIRL, Sienna Miller is the enchanting, enigmatic Edie, offering a moving characterization of the extremely troubled model/actress. The film kicks off as Edie, the daughter of a well-to-do horse rancher, leaves art school and moves to Manhattan in the mid-'60s. Her friend Chuck Wein (Jimmy Fallon) introduces her to Andy Warhol (Guy Pearce), and Andy is immediately taken with the waifish, wealthy Edie. He welcomes her into his Factory, the silver aluminum-foil covered loft where an assortment of artists and oddballs assisted him with his projects. Edie quickly falls into the hard partying, drug-addled scene, starring in Andy's experimental films and becoming his constant companion. She becomes well-known for her unique style, and the fashion industry taps her as its very first "It" girl. Edie is flying high on Andy, speed, and stardom, when she happens to meet the Bob Dylan-esque "Folksinger" (Hayden Christensen). She falls in love with him, and in doing so, falls out of Andy's favor. Her drug addiction spirals out of control, her parents cut off her cash flow, and her very bright star seems to burn out almost as quickly as it rose. As with most biopics, people are sure to quibble over the accuracy of FACTORY GIRL, and whether it offers fair portrayals of so many larger-than-life cultural icons. However, viewers are sure to agree that it makes a poignant statement about the pitfalls of fame. When Warhol tells Edie's mother that her daughter is going to be "super famous", Mrs. Sedgwick coldly responds: "And what exactly would be the value of that?" Judging from the very tragic, short life of Edie, there wasn't much value in it at all.

Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson star as Anne and Mary Boleyn in this adaptation of the bestselling novel by Philippa Gregory. While their story is perhaps one of history's most well known, THE OTHER BOLEYN GIRL has fun with the facts, creating a lusty, dramatic tale of deception and betrayal. The film begins with the girls' power-hungry uncle (David Morrissey), discovering that King Henry VIII's (Eric Bana) marriage to Catherine of Aragon (Ana Torrent) is falling apart. Their uncle suggests to their father (Mark Rylance) that he tempt the King into taking Anne (Portman) as his mistress, thus putting the family in the King's favor. But the King has no time for the strong-willed Anne, and instead turns his attentions to her already married, soft-spoken sister Mary. With her eye on the Queen's crown, Anne renews her attempts to seduce the king, driving a wedge between her and her sister. Bana is a brooding, sexy Henry, and Portman and Johansson both give strong performances as the beautiful and bewitching sisters. While some might quibble over the historical inaccuracies of the film (of which there are quite a few), most will let themselves get lost in the sea of beautiful bodices, and the anticipation of when those bodices might be ripped...

Set in the industrial South and based on a true story, Martin Ritt's NORMA RAE is a moving portrait of a woman's fight to improve both her own life and the deplorable conditions that exist in the mill where she works. Norma Rae (Sally Field) has worked at the textile mill for years, but when a union organizer from New York comes to town, Norma takes on the hostility of the mill's management and the apathy of her coworkers to try to unionize the mill. Field plays Norma Rae as a passionate woman who realizes her own potential and her need to rebel against the status quo. She is also infuriated by the conditions at the mill. When Norma, uneducated and poor, finally expresses her disgust with life at the mill, it is an electrifying moment, and Field radiates this energy for the rest of the film, providing an emotional core and drive that gives the picture its power. WORKING GIRL: A young secretary (Melanie Griffith in an Oscar-nominated performance) with dreams of moving up the corporate ladder thinks that her brains will help her achieve her goals. And when she finds a job with a seemingly helpful and sympathetic boss--who's also a woman (played by Sigourney Weaver)--it looks as if she's on her way. But it turns out the executive is slimy and duplicitous, stealing the secretary's clever ideas to further her own career. Now the furious secretary's determined to get revenge--and her plan may not only propel her to the top of the heap but get her a husband too (Harrison Ford). Mike Nichols directed this workplace comedy with a light, smart touch, getting terrific performances from his excellent cast.

In her smart, funny, and poignant first-person documentary LIVE NUDE GIRLS UNITE!, Julia Query, a writer, stand-up comic, and exotic dancer, chronicles the unionization of San Francisco's Lusty Lady club. Query and her cowriter-codirector, Vicky Funari (PAULINA), also a former Lusty Lady dancer, use snapshots from Julia's childhood, bits from her stand-up act, and comic-book style animation to illustrate the lesbian feminist's path from grad school to the peep show. Query's comment that before joining the sex industry, she had "never worked with so many women with college degrees" is underscored by the poised, intelligent dancers interviewed. Decadence and Siobhan explain that though dancing pays well, they are denied sick days, are scheduled based on race and breast size, and are sometimes secretly videotaped by customers. To remedy such abusive working conditions, Query and her coworkers form the Exotic Dancers Union, but the process is a lengthy, stressful one. Query also has the challenge of "coming out" as an exotic dancer to her mother, Dr. Joyce Wallace, a physician renowned for her trailblazing work with prostitutes, when they are scheduled to speak at the same conference. Query's film is a political, informative, and personal inside look at the sex trade and the difficulties of unionization.

In this survival-of-the-fittest teen comedy, high school is a dangerous jungle seething with teenagers who prey on each other like wild animals. The nonstop jokes are hilariously rewarding as they exaggerate adolescent vanity and satirize political correctness issues like race, class, and homosexuality. Here, the Plastics are the most popular girls in school. They wrote the rule book on Girl World, like always wearing pink on Tuesdays. And they're mean. So when pretty new girl Cady (Lindsay Lohan) arrives in school, the first thing they do is make fun of her. Then they try to win her over. Cady is torn between social cliques. She befriends the punky rebels Janis (Lizzy Caplan) and Damian (Daniel Franzese). But the guy Cady wants to date is friends with the Plastics--Regina (Rachel McAdams), Gretchen (Lacey Chabert), and Karen (Amanda Seyfriend)--so she has to be resourceful. Problem is, the two groups hate each other. Just trying to fit in, Cady jumps through hoops for the Plastics and becomes a mean girl in the process. Though her transformation is radical, when the final act of meanness is done, she learns a few valuable lessons. SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE writer Tina Fey contributes the script and also stars as a teacher, quietly smirking at her own jokes throughout the antics. Directed by FREAKY FRIDAY's Mark Waters, MEAN GIRLS doesn't miss a beat, following the faithful formula of teen fare such as SIXTEEN CANDLES and HEATHERS. The soundtrack features songs by Blondie, Missy Elliot, Pink, The Donnas, and Janis Ian.

TWO GIRLS FOR A MADMAN is a gem in the oeuvre of the quirky skinflick maestro Barry Mahon; it follows two young, attractive, and temperamentally opposite ballet students who are nonetheless good friends. Sonya is a good girl who takes her studies seriously, while Toni is a wild swinger with dreams of acting; she attends raucous orgies which, of course, are shown here in graphic detail. When psychotic Frank Yeager encounters Toni at an orgy, he blatantly flouts his psychiatrist's advice and follows her, eventually attacking her in a rough sexual encounter. Later, however, she recommends him to Sonya, describing him as "all man," and the madman eventually shows up at the girls' school looking for a follow-up to the first act! Quite explicit softcore, especially for a film from the 60s, TWO GIRLS sports an impressive orgy scene and an extremely sensual, luxurious shower scene. A millionaire represents the last hope of a host of sexy young things in trouble in MR. MARI'S GIRLS, and he is willing to come to their aid, for a price. Stella is a beautiful model hooked on heroin who will do anything for her next fix, including dance nude for Mr. Mari. Dirk is a tough lesbian desperately in love with her blind girlfriend Barbara, while poor Diane is a young high school girl who has gotten knocked up by her English teacher. All these lost souls congregate at Mr. Mari's place, and compete with one another for his help, resulting in one of the most spectacular catfights in sexploitation history! Helen Doe is a dutiful niece on her way to visit her aunt, blissfully unaware that a hooded strangler is lurking about; she is waylaid and brought to "The House of Horror on the Hill." There, she and six other TORTURED FEMALES are forced to perform according to their captors' will, coerced into submission through various forms of more or less shocking, titillating torture. This is an incredibly eccentric, exuberant roughie.

Set in 17th-century Holland, GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING follows the life of Griet (Scarlett Johansson), a young woman who must work as a maid to help her family make ends meet. Seeking employment at the home of renowned painter Johannes Vermeer (Colin Firth), Griet finds most of the household, including Vermeer's ever-pregnant wife (Essie Davis) and stern mother-in-law (Judy Parfitt), to be difficult and even hostile. However, she does form a unique bond with Vermeer himself, but this connection threatens to cause grief for both Griet and Vermeer. Complicating matters even further is attention from both Vermeer's wealthy patron Van Ruijven (Tom Wilkinson) and the charming local butcher's son (Cillian Murphy). Adapted from the book by Tracy Chevalier and helmed by first-time director Peter Webber, GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING creates a back story for Vermeer's famous painting of the same name. Johansson is excellent in her quiet, understated role, while Firth is suitably moody and enigmatic. However, the visuals are the true highlights of this remarkably photographed movie; Webber and, most notably, cinematographer Eduardo Serra establish a beautifully historic look and film every scene as if it were a series of gorgeous paintings in the style of that era. As a portrait of the life behind a portrait, GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING is an intriguing study of both art and desire.

She's classy. She's posh. She's savvy. And she's just as much "working girl" as she is "hooker with a heart of gold." Meet Belle, (DOCTOR WHO's Billie Piper), an expensive London call girl who's willing to take viewers on an intimate tour through her daily life. There's the personal on one side, the professional on the other, and never the twain shall meet, right? Well, for now at least. On the whole, Belle is a consummate professional, and her unusual lifestyle requires her to be coy with those who don't know how she truly earns her living. But when facing such problems as whether to ditch an underwhelming john for the rare opportunity of making a sex fantasy come true, or discovering a soft spot for a sweet and wonderful client, it tends to become increasingly difficult to separate business from pleasure and pleasure from heartache. Not unlike the title character of ALFIE, Belle playfully breaks the fourth wall to constantly engage the viewer in a stylistic device that echoes the series' inspiration, a real-life blog written by a high-class prostitute named Belle de Jour. SECRET DIARY OF A CALL GIRL was already a smash hit in England before it surfaced on the airwaves of Canada's Showcase and America's Showtime, but now this intoxicating, sometimes funny, and always sexy drama can be enjoyed internationally. Included here are all eight episodes of the series' second season.

Originally broadcast on HBO, THE GIRL IN THE CAFE is a thought-provoking drama from British director David Yates (THE WAY WE LIVE NOW). Yates slices his narrative into two parts; the first involves a lengthy courtship between primary characters Lawrence (Bill Nighy) and Gina (Kelly MacDonald). Meeting by chance in a cafe, the two share a common bond, although Lawrence's natural reticence makes it hard for Gina to read him. The second half of the film sees the couple travelling to Reykjavik in Iceland, where high-ranking politician Lawrence is due to work at the G8 summit. But Gina has a few surprises in store for both Lawrence and the gathering of politicians, leading to an eye-opening second half of the movie. Beautifully shot, THE GIRL IN THE CAFE is a politically-charged romance movie with remarkable performances from Nighy and MacDonald.

Writer-director David Gordon Green obliterates the sophomore slump theory with ALL THE REAL GIRLS, an achingly sincere drama that captures the complexities of first love--and loss--with breathtaking honesty. Paul (Paul Schneider), a small town charmer, has spent his life carousing with his buddies Tip (Shea Whigham), Bo (Maurice Compte), and Bust-Ass (a scene-stealing Danny McBride), in addition to sleeping with every girl in town. But when Tip's virginal younger sister, Noel (Zooey Deschanel), returns from boarding school, Paul's priorities change completely. Discovering love for the first time, Paul spurns his lecherous past and declares himself a new man. No more booze, no more two-timing. But just when he thinks he's found redemption, something happens that shatters him to his core. Like his celebrated debut, GEORGE WASHINGTON, Green's second film unfolds like a nostalgic dream. Haunting, tender, and beautifully photographed by Tim Orr, ALL THE REAL GIRLS is destined to become a classic in the romantic genre. Its success is due in large part to leads Schneider and Deschanel, who deliver performances that are chilling in their nakedness.

Framed for murdering her lover, Carol Madison (Ione Sky) is forced to endure life behind bars in John McNaughton's GIRLS IN PRISON. Carol finds the going rough in the big house and eventually joins a gang run by two hardened convicts, Jennifer (Anne Heche) and Aggie (Missy Crider). Together they fend off the crooked warden and plan a daring breakout. With a crackling script cowritten by legendary screenwriter-director Samuel Fuller, characteristically provocative direction by McNaughton (HENRY PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER), and steamy performances from Hecht, Crider, and Skye, GIRLS IN PRISON has all the ingredients for a sizzlingly good time. McNaughton takes his first dive into lesbian erotica (he would go even further in WILD THINGS), bestowing upon viewers a racy shower scene in which Carol is seduced by one of her fellow inmates. In the tradition of classic women-behind-bars films such as CAGED HEAT, WOMEN IN CAGES, and CAGED FURY, GIRLS IN PRISON is both a satisfyingly overstuffed collection of guilty pleasures and a campy noir thriller.

Before her sister Anne married King Henry VIII, the other Boleyn girl, Mary, was his mistress. Inspired by the best-selling novel by Philippa Gregory, this BBC production tells the scandalous story of Mary Boleyn's love affair against a backdrop of political intrigue. Used as a bargaining chip in family power plays, Mary was eventually cast aside when the notorious monarch turned his attention to her oldest sister. The same scenario is played out in this film starring Natascha McElhone (CALIFORNICATION) as Mary, and in the identically titled 2008 feature film starring Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson.

Two drive-in classics from the 1950s. VIOLENT YEARS: Another cinematic atrocity from a screenplay by Ed (PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE) Wood. Leather-jacketed devil-dolls form a girl gang, rape rich guys, rob gas stations, and even engage in heavy petting. A wonderful final line magnificently sums up the entire movie. GIRL GANG: These ladies like nothing better than petting and pot, except maybe feeding their heroin addictions and causing general mayhem. The joyriding turns tragic, however, when Wanda gets shot during a holdup gone so, so wrong.

A brunette Sarah Michelle Gellar stars opposite Alec Baldwin in this romantic coming-of-age story loosely based on the popular Melissa Banks book THE GIRL'S GUIDE TO HUNTING AND FISHING. Gellar plays Brett Eisenberg, a young woman working her way up New York City's publishing ladder. Eager to get ahead, Brett attends a book signing with hopes of meeting influential publishing giant Archie Knox (Alec Baldwin). No sooner do they trade glances than Archie is wooing Brett with extravagant dates, expensive gifts, and career assistance. The relationship is a storybook romance from the start, but slowly gets much more complicated due to the age difference and Archie's alcoholism. Viewers might initially struggle to relate to the young protagonist--things seem to come a bit too easily for Brett, who conveniently lives rent-free in her grandmother's vacant and fancy Manhattan apartment. That said, it's easy to understand why the filmmakers chose this scenario, as New York does look better through the eyes of privilege. It is a land mysteriously without subways, and where every building has a doorman. The setting is contrived, but the romance manages to feel authentic. Watching Archie, anyone can see how a girl could easily swoon over him. Baldwin is extremely charming as a flawed but charismatic man close in age to Brett's father. SUBURBAN GIRL is highly entertaining throughout, and a fine showcase for Baldwin, who, playing a character with eerie similarities to himself, is a joy to watch.

At a London airport, shy bank clerk John (Ben Chaplin) watches passengers arriving from an international flight. He's waiting for his mail order bride to arrive from Russia. When she finally appears, she's not exactly what John had in mind--tall, thin, and gangly, with scruffy hair and rings around her eyes, Nadia (Nicole Kidman) seems worn, apprehensive, and tired. As he drives her home, John discovers she can't speak a word of English, but she does smoke prodigiously. He makes repeated calls to the agency that arranged the marriage, leaving messages that a mistake has been made. But although Nadia doesn't know any English, John soon discovers that she knows all about sex. He changes his mind about sending her back. The opening of director Jez Butterworth's BIRTHDAY GIRL is amusing and raunchy. But the film takes off in another direction when, on Nadia's birthday, two boisterous Russians (exuberantly played by French actors Vincent Cassel and Matthieu Kassovitz) arrive and take over John's home. The clever, twisting narrative that follows is, by turns, surprising, funny, and suspenseful. Chaplin's thoughtful performance counterbalances Kidman's troubled volatile heroine, who is not who she seems to be.

The girl of the title, Kate Brady (Rita Tushingham), is an artless, insecure young woman who lives on the family farm in Dublin. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she falls into a romantic affair with an accomplished, older author (Peter Finch). Lushly photographed, GIRL WITH GREEN EYES is one of many films from Britain in the early 60s that defined a new filmmaking generation through complex characters and the use of harsh realism. Based on the novel THE LONELY GIRL by Edna O'Brien, who also wrote the screenplay. The film is notable for the acclaimed performance of Tushingham in one of her earliest roles.

The Showtime original movie SOLDIER'S GIRL tells the heartwrenching true story of Private Barry Winchell (Troy Garity, son of Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden), a 21-year-old soldier beaten to death in army barracks because of his love affair with a transgendered nightclub singer. The ostensibly heterosexual Winchell meets Calpernia Adams (Lee Pace) while out on the town with his infantry buddies and surprises even himself when he decides to date the vulnerable pre-op transsexual. But as the relationship blossoms, it infuriates Winchell's mentally unstable roommate Justin Fisher (Shawn Hatosy), who incites fellow soldier Calvin Glover (Philip Eddolls) to murder Winchell with a baseball bat. A scathing indictment of the codified machismo and homophobia that permeate military life, SOLDIER'S GIRL is also a sweet and tender story of a love that transcends boundaries.

Karen Moncrieff follows up her well-received debut feature, BLUE CAR, with THE DEAD GIRL, an impressive, haunting ensemble drama. When a young girl is found murdered, the lives of several different individuals are impacted. Some of these connections are peripheral, while many others are painfully direct. The film is broken up into five distinct chapters, each with its own title. In "The Stranger," Arden (Toni Collette) finds the body, much to her abusive mother's (Piper Laurie) dismay. "The Sister" follows a graduate student (Rose Byrne) who is still mourning the disappearance of her sister along with her mother (Mary Steenburgen). Mary Beth Hurt stars in "The Wife" as a frustrated housewife who discovers that her husband (Nick Searcy) has been up to no good. "The Mother" features Marcia Gay Harden as a heartbroken mother who travels to Los Angeles to see how her murdered daughter lived and forms an unlikely bond with her daughter's former roommate (Kerry Washington). Lastly, "The Dead Girl" tells the story of Krista (Brittany Murphy), a tempestuous drug addict who wants to visit her daughter on her birthday, but fate conspires to bring her down. Moncrieff uses different filmmaking techniques to tell each story (handheld camerawork vs. static cinematography, a variety of color schemes, etc.), but the overall tone remains the same. This is a sad, somber world, yet glimpses of hope poke through the cracks at the most unexpected moments. An all-star cast brings Moncrieff's vision to life, but it is Brittany Murphy who steals the show, delivering a performance so naked and reckless that it's painful to watch.

Lee Rose's four-hour miniseries A GIRL THING takes an intelligent look at women's relationships in the early 21st century. Made up of four individual stories, the film revolves around Dr. Noonan (Stockard Channing), a psychiatrist listening to the dreams and aspirations, longings and nightmares, hopes and fears of the contemporary woman. The first story, "It Don't Mean a Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing," stars Elle Macpherson as a successful partner in a New York law firm who cannot maintain a relationship with a man. After the worst double blind date of her life (the men are played by Brent Spiner and Bruce Greenwood), she feels drawn to the other woman on the date, Casey (Kate Capshaw), a successful advertising executive, and the two embark on a heated affair that complicates their lives. The second story, "The Three Sisters (Not That One)", stars Rebecca DeMornay, Glenne Headley, and Allison Janney as three sisters who are forced to spend a week in their recently deceased mother's house in order to collect a large inheritance. "Unholy Alliances" stars Lynn Whitfield as Nia, a woman who suspects her husband (Scott Bakula) of having an affair and so hires a decoy (Linda Hamilton) to try to trap him. And finally, "I'm Okay, It's You I'm Not So Sure About" features Camryn Manheim as a deeply disturbed woman who forces Dr. Noonan to reevaluate her chosen profession and the value of her own life. A GIRL THING is a moving, poignant labor of love that features outstanding acting and razor-sharp dialogue.
