After a nearly five-year hiatus, international superstar Michael Jackson followed up the multi-platinum success of BAD with his hardhitting 1991 album DANGEROUS. A gutsy opus of dance-oriented pop, DANGEROUS spawned an ambitious world tour that broke previous attendance records and took Jackson to the newly democratized cities of Eastern-bloc Europe. This highly rated HBO special captures Jackson on the DANGEROUS tour with a complete concert recorded in Bucharest, Romania, on October 1, 1992, blazing through an energetic set that includes dazzling live performances of album hits like "Heal the World" and "Black or White" as well as older classics "Billie Jean," "Beat It," "Man in the Mirror," and more.

This CBS Special on the life of Michael Jackson originally aired on January 2nd, 2004. Designed as a retrospective look at the life and career of the singing sensation, the show was dogged by the controversy surrounding Jackson due to a number of child abuse allegations that were aimed at him. Nevertheless the show managed to produce a positive message in its overview of the Jackson ouvre, and interspersed documentary footage with some stunning performances from the self-styled King of Pop. Among the clips are a rendition of "Ben" from American Bandstand, "Billie Jean" from the Motown 25th anniversary TV special, "The Way You Make Me Feel" performed at the Grammys, and many others.

In the summer of 2005, Green Day performed in front of some of its largest crowds ever--quite an achievement for a band that crashed into the mainstream back in 1994, with the release of their seminal pop-punk album DOOKIE. With catchy melodies, smart songwriting, and a strong sense of humor, band members Billy Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Al Sobrante had an enormous impact on the musical culture of the '90s. The band has had its ups and downs since then, but they achieved another big hit and a new level of critical respect with 2004's powerful rock opera AMERICAN IDIOT. Their searing performances at Britain's enormous Milton Keyes National Bowl provides the material for this concert film, which is directed by Samuel Bayer, the man behind their acclaimed "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" video. Hits from IDIOT are played here side-by-side with old standbys like "Basket Case," "Longview," and "Minority." Also included are in-depth interviews with the band and exclusive backstage footage.

On October 3, 1993, Army Rangers and members of the elite Delta Force participated in a covert operation in Mogadishu, Somalia that went horribly wrong. Sent to abduct two lieutenants of a vicious Somali warlord, the soldiers found themselves surrounded by hostile militia. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down and many men lost their lives. Mark Bowden of the Philadelphia Inquirer told the story of the battle in his exhaustively researched, critically acclaimed book, BLACK HAWK DOWN, and filmmaker Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR) and screenwriter Ken Nolan have done an amazing job of bringing the dramatic story to the screen. Like Bowden's book, the film does not thoroughly examine the context of the conflict, but gives a detailed and intense blow-by-blow account of the fighting. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Josh Hartnett as a competent but nervous Ranger sergeant leading his first mission, Ewan McGregor as a "desk jockey" who excels when sent into combat, Eric Bana (THE INCREDIBLE HULK) as a cocky and enigmatic Delta, and Ron Eldard as a downed Black Hawk pilot. The violence of the film is brutal and nearly constant. Scott unflinchingly captures the chaos and mayhem of battle with tremendous visual finesse.

Though they began their career practicing an artier, more theatrical variant on the Led Zeppelin hard-rock sound, Queen's 1975 album A NIGHT AT THE OPERA is where they begin to show their own unique brand of eclecticism and compositional facility--not least on the quintessential classic-rock radio staple "Bohemian Rhapsody." This program offers a critical review of the landmark album through archival footage, live performance clips, and interviews with critics, musicologists, and surviving band members.

Given his penchant for flouting rock conventions, it's not surprising to find pianist/singer-songwriter Ben Folds teaming with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra for a unique live performance bridging the divide between pop and classical music. Recorded on March 12 and 13, 2005, in Perth, Australia, the concert finds Folds and conductor Simon Kenway leading the WASO in orchestral arrangements of Folds's quirky solo work, culled mostly from his 2001 album, ROCKIN' THE SUBURBS, including "Zak and Sara," "Fred Jones Part 2," "Annie Waits," and "The Ascent of Stan."

After toiling for years as an underground cult favorite with a rabidly devoted fan base, Irish rock band U2 finally broke through to mainstream success on the strength of their 1987 opus THE JOSHUA TREE. Released in March of that year, THE JOSHUA TREE became U2's first number-one album and won a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The record's crossover appeal stems from its emotional exploration of universal topics such as love ("With or Without You"), death ("One Tree Hill"), and spiritual longing ("I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For") without sacrificing any of the trademark social consciousness of the band's earlier albums ("Bullet the Blue Sky," "Mothers of the Disappeared"). This episode of the CLASSIC ALBUMS series details the making of U2's chart-topping album through interviews with band members, archival film footage, and live performances.

What is the difference between a gang and a team? DJ Williams (Columbus Short) is forced to confront this question, along with the usual post-adolescent romantic and family conflicts, when his well-meaning uncle (Harry Lennix) enrolls him at his Atlanta alma mater, Truth University. His enrollment is part of a plea bargain that will save him from being imprisoned, and it is also a last resort to rescue him from the LA gang life that has already claimed his beloved brother. An avid and remarkably gifted hip-hop dancer, DJ is quickly solicited by two fraternities who want to make use of his skills on their respective step teams. DJ resists at first, equating fraternities and stepping as stultifying, upper-class activities. Eventually DJ warms to the underdog fraternity and, with his amazing krumping, clowning, and breaking, transforms the team. More importantly, the team transforms him, providing a creative outlet and a character-building support network that help cushion the blows life keeps dealing. While the drama incorporates many overly familiar themes and subplots, the main hook is the spectacular step dancing, shot in a dynamic, quick-cut style that emphasizes the muscularity, inventiveness, and stirring teamwork required. The final quotation from Dr. Martin Luther King drives home the film's message: "Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education."

In 1990, coaches Sean Porter and Malcolm Moore took the Kilpatrick Mustangs--a football team of hard-core juvenile offenders from California's Camp Kilpatrick juvenile detention center--through their inaugural season, in which they reached the regional championships. In 1993, an Emmy-winning documentary, GRIDIRON GANG, aired on U.S. television. In this fictionalized version of the same name, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson stars as Porter, the coach who uses sports as a means to instill self-esteem into a group or boys for whom crime is a way of life. A former troubled youth who used football as a means to stay off of the streets, Porter, along with Malcolm Moore (Xibit) now presides over Camp Kilpatrick, where the inmates are gang members, murderers, and drug dealers. Among them are Willie Weathers (Jade York), a gang member doing time for a botched act of revenge. Showing that old rivalries hold true even away from the streets, fellow inmate and rival gang member Calvin Owens (David Thomas) won't let Willie forget that they are sworn enemies. But once Porter introduces football as an outlet, the common goal of winning unites them in ways that no one expected. Sports films are not known for harboring O-Henry-like twists at their conclusions, and GRIDIRON GANG is no exception, but director Phil Joanou (STATE OF GRACE) keeps the proceedings gritty (especially for a PG-13 rating), giving us not only the uplifting and exciting football sequences, but also a handful of heart-pounding--and somewhat graphic--scenes of gang violence, and former Yes member Trevor Rabin's effective score is a nice alternative to the typical pop soundtrack. Not all sweetness and light, GRIDIRON GANG is fine addition to the realm of cinematic sports, leavening the sap with a copious counter-dose of realism.
