THE GUNS OF FORT PETTICOAT is a solid Western, with Audie Murphy starring as Lieutenant Frank Hewitt, a moralistic army officer who refuses to take part in an unauthorized raid on an Indian tribe, deciding instead to head back to Texas. In the eyes of his companions, Hewitt is a coward, but Hewitt realizes that the Indians will want revenge for the raid, and may attack the Texan women left behind. At Fort Petticoat, Hewitt trains the women into perfect soldiers, finding romance along the way. When the Indians arrive, Hewitt and the ladies are ready to defend themselves, though Hewitt has a court martial waiting for him whether they survive or not. Veteran director George Marshall handles the plot with grace and efficiency, avoiding sloppy melodrama. Murphy shines in the heroic role, and the love scenes with Kathryn Grant sparkle.
