In this action-packed Western, three wandering sons return home to attend the funeral of their mother, Katie Elder, who's been murdered. The brothers then set their sights on the man responsible for her death, as well as for the death of their father, who was killed six months earlier. They receive help from a fourth brother, who has remained at home. However, getting revenge won't be easy because the culprit, who has also gained possession of the family's ranch, will do anything to stop them--including hiring an assassin to kill the oldest brother, John. This classic late-era John Wayne Western features a musical score that bears a suspicious resemblance to the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN theme. (Both were written by Elmer Bernstein.) Also starring in Henry Hathaway's excellent cast are Dean Martin, Earl Holliman, James Gregory, George Kennedy, and Dennis Hopper.

When con men Zack Thomas (Frank Sinatra) and Joe Jarrett (Dean Martin) team up to open a gambling den, they quickly realize that business in the wild West isn't so easy. Both miscreant banker Harvey Burden (Victor Buono) and loose-cannon gunman Matson (Charles Bronson) are out to stifle Zack and Joe's moneymaking schemes. Luckily, the grifters still find plenty of time to romance a couple of voluptuous frontier babes (Anita Ekberg and Ursula Andress). Rat Packers Sinatra and Martin fuel this comedic Western with their genuine, inimitable chemistry, and the pleasingly skewed supporting cast--including the staggering beauties Ekberg and Andress, the Three Stooges, and Yaphet Kotto in an uncredited cameo that marked his film debut--follows their roisterous lead. Director Robert Aldrich, fresh off the critical and popular success of his caustic psycho-thriller WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE?, uses a much lighter touch in 4 FOR TEXAS to create an enjoyable, star-studded ride through the old West.

After being sentenced to death for their participation in a bank robbery, a pair of outlaw brothers take a beautiful woman hostage and flee across the Mexican desert. Naturally, she falls for one of them, even though her husband was killed in the bank robbery. Though the plot stretches credulity, this one's still worth watching for the sheer fun of it.

Leaving behind the chattering slot machines of Vegas for the tumbleweed-tossed American frontier, the Rat Pack ride across the Wild West in this irreverent update of GUNGA DIN. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Peter Lawford star as a trio of heroic cavalrymen who--along with a slave-turned-bugler played by Sammy Davis Jr.--battle the usual assortment of malicious Indians and sordid outlaws. Director John Sturges (THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN) keeps things light, favoring the comic sparring of his stars over the action, making for one of the better Rat Pack films.

This double feature presents a pair of John Wayne's best Westerns. In THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER (1965), three wandering sons return home to attend the funeral of their murdered mother and set their sights on the man responsible for her death. And in THE SHOOTIST (1976), a veteran gunslinger learns that he's dying of stomach cancer and has no more than two months to live (a poignant, gracious swansong for Wayne, who, like his character, was dying of cancer as the film was being shot). Three-time Academy Award winner Walter Brennan, one of the cinema's greatest actors, plays an aging but extremely active gunslinger searching the Old West for his son (Jason Evers) in GUNS OF WILL SONNETT. His grandson (Dack Rambo) rides with him on his quest and shares his adventures and showdowns with such guest stars as Jack Nicholson, Jack Elam, Claude Akins, Charles Grodin, Harry Dean Stanton, Cloris Leachman, Strother Martin, and Joan Blondell. The superb acting and penetrating adult scripts make this fast-paced series a gripping classic, and the fascinating premise of an elderly gunfighter as the lead character (Brennan was 73 when the series began) gives us all hope for continued relevance as we age.

COWBOYS - After his cowhands desert him for a nearby gold rush, aging, leather-tough rancher Will Anderson (John Wayne) resorts to hiring 11 schoolboys to help him on a 400-mile cattle run. Setting off with the boys and an eloquent but equally tough black cook (Roscoe Lee Browne), Anderson must get his cattle to their destination while contending with the wilderness and a psychotic, vengeful ex-con (Bruce Dern) who is out to get him. With an amazingly natural performance by Wayne, this stylized, action-packed Western is exquisitely filmed, emotionally sensitive, and highly entertaining. Director Mark Rydell gets solid performances out of not just Wayne (in one of his later screen roles) and Browne, but the group of youngsters accompanying them on the journey, as well as actors like Slim Pickens and Colleen Dewhurst who play smaller supporting roles. Close attention is also paid to the natural beauty of the mountains, wild mustangs, and other often overlooked standard Western fare. RIO BRAVO - No-nonsense Texas border sheriff John T. Chance (John Wayne) fights off ruthless mercenary gunmen in order to keep a murderer in custody. A ragtag band of volunteers, consisting of a singing kid, a toothless old man, a recovering alcoholic, and a spunky woman, assists. Contains an interesting sing-along interlude among the group, and yes, the Duke participates.
