Hollywood's most celebrated luminaries--behind the camera as well as in front of it--combined talents to present this epic tale of the development of the American West from the 1830s through the Civil War to the end of the century, as seen through the eyes of one pioneer family. The film, divided into three chapters--"The Civil War" (directed by John Ford), "The Railroad" (directed by George Marshall), and "The River, the Plains, the Outlaws" (directed by Henry Hathaway)--tells the story of the Prescotts, a spirited group of easterners who make a declaration to migrate west. When their parents are lost in a tragic river accident, Eve (Carroll Baker) and Lilith (Debbie Reynolds) go their separate ways. Eve remains on the land that took her parents, settling down with the well-intentioned Linus Rawlings (James Stewart), while Lilith becomes a singer who is courted by the conniving Cleve Van Valen (Gregory Peck) when he learns that she has inherited a fortune in California. As time passes and the Civil War takes the life of Linus, the newest generation of Prescott offspring struggles with even greater danger and loss, in the form of fierce Indians as well as family archrivals. Top-notch production values and an endless string of solid performances have earned HOW THE WEST WAS WON the well-deserved label as one of Hollywood's most revered classics.

James Arness vaulted into the annals of television history with his iconic portrayal of U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon in the long-running television Western GUNSMOKE. Armed with a quick draw and an even quicker wit, the principled and intelligent Marshal Dillon brought peace and righteousness to the lawless frontier of 1800s Dodge City with the help of his trusted deputy, Chester Goode (Dennis Weaver), his friend Doc Adams (Milburn Stone), and saloon keeper Miss Kitty (Amanda Blake). This collection presents the second volume of the series' second season.

Although SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL GUNFIGHTER features the same director and many of the same cast members as SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF, the film isn't a sequel to the latter movie. Instead, it's another delightful collaboration between director Burt Kennedy and leading man James Garner. This time around Garner plays Latigo Smith, a wandering con man who arrives in the town of Purgatory. When two competing mine owners mistake him for a hired gunman, Latigo sees a chance to get his hands on some of their ill-gotten gains. Trouble arises, however, when the real gunslinger comes to town.

A boisterous outlaw must break free from the notorious gang he once ran with in order to complete his reformation. The gang is not about to let him go that easily, though. It seems there are some old scores to settle. This was the twenty-ninth film for the aging Elvis, which is of course a must for Elvis fans, but beware: only one song ("Charro").

Gregory Peck stars as Sam Varner, an ex-Army man who escorts a girl (Eva Marie Saint) kidnapped by Apaches across the desolate Southwest. Joining them are the girl's half-Indian son and Varner's best friend (Robert Forster). But their long journey across the desert won't be alone. Following close behind is a a man intent on stopping them--the boy's homicidal father. It's a game of cat and mouse in this Western thriller that reteams Peck with TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD director Robert Mulligan and producer Alan J. Pakula.

Howard Hawks's final film once again teams him with John Wayne, with a script by Leigh Brackett (who also wrote his EL DORADO and RIO BRAVO). The time is just after the end of the Civil War. Wayne is Union Colonel Cord McNally, who is teamed with two Confederate soldiers he captured during the war in order to take down a thieving bootlegger. Their travels take them to a small town being held in terror by an evil Sheriff. McNally and his crew decide to help the townspeople with their own brand of justice. With a considerable amount of humor and Hawks's reliable formula in which a motley band of men unite for a common cause, RIO LOBO is a fitting conclusion to both his western trilogy and a distinguished career.

A pure western in which a lawmen tracks a criminal, TRUE GRIT, based on Charles Portis' novel, reunited John Wayne with director Henry Hathaway (THE SONS OF KATIE ELDER). Wayne is crotchety U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn, who would rather stay home than chase criminals. He heeds the call, though, when fourteen year-old Mattie Ross (Kim Darby) calls on him to avenge her father's death at the hands of a man who has escaped into Indian territory. Glen Campbell is a Texas ranger who accompanies them for his own reasons. Wayne reprised the role six years later in ROOSTER COGBURN.

John Wayne is Jacob McCandles, an aging cowboy in an Old West that is on the verge of modernization. When his eight-year-old grandson is kidnapped by a violent gang led by the evil John Fain (Richard Boone), Jacob's estranged wife (Maureen O' Hara) enlists his help to rescue the boy. Jacob and his three sons (one of whom is portrayed by Wayne's real-life son Patrick) set out to bring the gang to justice. This late-period Wayne western is characterized by a gritty realism not present in most of his earlier works. The surprisingly graphic violence is also tempered with abundant humor.

Director Burt Kennedy's Western is a bawdy, all-out parody that skewers every cliché the genre has to offer. There's Jason McCullough (James Garner), the sharpshooting stranger passing through town who becomes sheriff; the Danbys, a villainous gang who terrorizes the entire community; Prudy Perkins (Joan Hackett), the lily white maiden who wants to marry the sheriff; and the local drunk (the great Jack Elam) whom McCullough appoints as his deputy. Although McCullough manages to arrest Joe Danby (Bruce Dern), the rest of the Danby gang is set on busting him out of prison. Garner is utterly charming as the earnest hero of this entertaining tale, cool and calm as a cucumber; don't miss the scene in which he first imprisons Joe Danby in a cell without bars.

In this third remake of Kurasawa's THE SEVEN SAMURAI, the "seven" gunslingers free Mexican political prisoners, trains them as warriors and fights with them in an attack upon a Mexican fortress in an attempt to free a revolutionary leader. Filmed in Panavision with an Elmer Bernstein score, the film gives nothing new but is highly entertaining and spawned a sequel, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN RIDE!
