The Singing Cowboy is at his best in this old West classic. Gene plays a cowboy who trains wild horses and then sells them to the Saddle Rock stagecoach line, where he does some pretty good business. That is, until Doc Lockwood ((Lyle Talbott), his only competitor, decides to get in on Gene's turf. Gene pairs up with Parson Brooks to clean up the town, turning it into a law-abiding community. A spectacular stagecoach race, multiple gun battles, and of course, Gene's characteristic songs of faith, make this both an enjoyable and highly positive ride.

The Singing Cowboy and quintessential filmic good guy is "The Whirlwind," crack postal inspector who arrives in Red Bluff to investigate a series of mail robberies. Big Jim Lassiter is in control of much of the land in the area, and Gene becomes suspicious of him when the charred remains of some stolen postal bonds turn up on his property, but he lacks the proof to confirm his suspicions. This arrives, however, in the form of Wade Trimble, a henchman of Big Jim's who confesses that Lassiter killed his own brother in order to steal his lovely niece Elaine's estate, and has also been setting up a bona fide old West crime syndicate responsible for the robberies. Gene and Agent Burnett, who is posing as a horse doctor, set about cleaning up the criminal element of Red Bluff.

It's 1850 and the old west runs wild. Gene Autry has just been elected as the mayor of a California boomtown named Quartz City, and he's determined to impose the law on this ungoverned and turbulent community. His first order of business is to get rid of the gambling den run by the nefarious Tod Rawlings (Larry Lauter), and his hostess Bee Laverne (Christine Larson). He then imports a trainful of women to help domesticate the town, and Rawlings attempts to steal the train and its cargo to sell them to some love-starved miners. Gene and his trusty #1 deputy manage to foil his plans, however, and the persistent Rawlings mounts a last-ditch effort to take over the town. This classic Autry fare also stars Gail Davis as one of the new arrivals who falls for the wrong man, and of course, Champion, the world's wonder horse.
